AkzoNobel’s new Ecosure line includes matt, gloss and undercoat varieties.
AkzoNobel’s Ecosure paint range launched



AkzoNobel has launched Ecosure, an environmentally friendly decorative paint range for the professional market. The product was developed by Dulux Trade in conjunction with Forum for the Future, an independent group of sustainability experts. For AkzoNobel it represents a major step towards environmentally sustainable paint with reduced carbon and VOCs. Ecosure’s packaging is also made from at least 25% recycled materials. Ecosure was endorsed by Marks & Spencer at the recent EcoBuild 2008 event and will be trialed by the retail firm at its new White City store in London.

Valspar Duramax semi-gloss



The Valspar Corporation has introduced Valspar Duramax in semi-gloss. Valspar Duramax Semi-Gloss joins Duramax Flat and Duramax Satin paints. Valspar Duramax paint is infused with Crosslinking Ti3 technology for maximum adhesion, UV protection and durability. Drying quickly, Valspar Duramax creates a thicker finish to help hide minor surface defects and small cracks. Water-based and 100% acrylic, Valspar Duramax cleans up easily with soap and water and is low odor. Valspar Duramax Semi-Gloss is available at Lowe’s nationwide.

Solar reflective extrusion coating for Green Building



The Valspar Corporation has developed Flurospar SR coatings, a solar reflective paint for the aluminum extrusion and wall panel market. Coating aluminum windows, curtain walls, shutters, awnings, louvers, wall panels and other building components with Flurospar SR coatings reduces surface temperature, resulting in cooler internal building temperatures, according to the company. It is formulated with solar reflective (SR) pigments that keep building components cooler than bare aluminum, anodized aluminum, and comparable paint colors. Flurospar SR finishes are available in a wide variety of colors including white, black, green, blue, brown and red. Pearlescent effects are also available in the Flurospar SR Classic II formulation.

Exterior PVC coating from APV Engineered Coatings



In response to the increasing usage of plastic in exterior applications, APV Engineered Coatings has developed a line of Kynar-based coatings for both rigid and non-rigid PVC plastic. These products are formulated to cure at relatively low temperatures and oven dwell times, are durable, exhibit good substrate adhesion, and are UV and weather resistant. The product line is available in both water- and solvent-based formulations, and can be applied using either spray or roll coat methods.

ACME’s new Advanced Industrial Coatings & Finish 1



ACME Automotive Finishes, a registered trademark of The Sherwin-Williams Company, has introduced Advanced Industrial Coatings. This new product line is comprised of two industrial coatings systems that utilize automotive grade pigments and resins for increased durability and longevity. The new coatings are ideal for use on industrial applications that require durability and sag-resistance such as farm and implement equipment, construction equipment, dumpsters, oil rigs, mining equipment, machinery, trailer frames, truck boxes, lawn and garden equipment and metal parts. Advanced Industrial Coatings are available in both an acrylic enamel and acrylic urethane system. They are free of lead and chromate hazards, are VOC-compliant and use the ACME intermix system with factory pre-packaged colors. The line is offered as an intermix system with an initial color pallet of 167 popular solid colors. It includes a 1K/2K acrylic enamel topcoat; a 2K acrylic urethane topcoat; a 1K epoxy primer; a 2K direct-to-metal urethane primer; and AIC Color Documentation.

The company has also launched Finish 1 Automotive Refinish Products in factory-packaged colors (FPC). The initial launch of Finish 1 will include a complete set of FPC Acrylic Enamels including 25 solid, metallic and pearlescent colors. Finish 1 Factory Packaged Acrylic Enamels offer a high gloss finish and are low 3.5 VOC compliant. The new Finish 1 launch also includes three new sealers: FS510 Black, FS512 Gray and FS514 White. These Finish 1 4.6 VOC enamel sealers are designed to create a solid foundation and uniform color, have both one component and two component capabilities and can be recoated wet-on-wet.

ICA Group’s new water-based interior wood coatings



Italy-based wood coatings specialists ICA Group has launched Superfeel and Super care bicomponent water-based coatings for interior furnishings. Designed to provide smoothness, Superfeel is a white/pigmented matt topcoat available in three gloss levels. Once it has been ten percent catalyzed with CA501 and diluted with water, Superfeel can be sprayed on using pneumatic or airmix guns in quantities of between 120-150 grams per meter squared, for up to a maximum of two coats.

Supercare polyurethane offers scratch resistance and is also available in a number of gloss levels. The main characteristics include its non-yellowing and non-scratch properties, which make it ideal for furniture and internal furnishings. The scratch resistance delivered by this product makes it particularly suitable for the coating of those parts of furniture that are most subject to wear such as the surfaces of tables, desks and worktops. Supercare should be ten percent catalyzed with CA500 and diluted with water, before being sprayed on with pneumatic or airmix guns in quantities of between 80-130 grams per meter squared, for up to a maximum of two coats.

New PPG Truefinish industrial coatings products



PPG Truefinish Industrial Coatings has launched several new products for industrial coatings applications. Promoting corrosion resistance over cleaned and treated steel, Spectracron 560 Wet-On-Wet Epoxy Primer suits short wet-on-wet application windows when top coated with Spectracron 2K polyurethane enamels; polyurethane topcoat can be applied directly over this primer 10-15 minutes after application. Formulated with VOC less than or equal to 3.5 lb/gal and less than 0.17 lb HAPS/gal, this 2-component, chrome-free primer adheres to cleaned G90 galvanized steel and aluminum as well as fiberglass substrates.

Applied directly to cleaned or blasted steel, Spectracron 380 promotes surface protection and color/gloss retention. This 2-component exterior-grade enamel has blended VOC of 3.5 lb/gal max and imparts resistance to chemicals, abrasion and impact. There are no hazardous air pollutants or SARA 313 constituents, and various colors and glosses are available. Poly-Iothane HS can be applied directly to cleaned or blasted steel as well as over 2K epoxy or polyurethane primers.

Formulated for accelerated drying times, Aquacron 880 Series interior/exterior enamel is intended for industrial use on bare or primed metal surfaces. Low-odor solution contains no heavy metals, comes in range of colors and gloss, and has no recoat window. Water can be used for reduction and cleanup, and product can be formulated to 2.8 VOC (less water) compliance.

Aquacron 835 is suited for industrial use on bare metal surfaces where corrosion resistance is needed. It can be top coated with water reducible alkyd enamels or solvent-based enamels in field after thoroughly dried and contain no heavy metals. Along with less than one pound of organic HAPS/gallon of solids, low-odor primer features 2.8 lb/gal VOC-compliant formulation compatible with tap water reduction.

Suitable for interior and limited exterior applications, Aquacron 833 can be field top coated with water reducible alkyd enamels or solvent-based enamels after thoroughly dried. Low-odor product contains no heavy metals, is VOC-compliant, and has less than one pound of organic HAPS/gal of solids. Applications include metal fabrication, structural steel, industrial machinery, cabinets, racking and shelving.

BASF Refinish launches new R-M Onyx HD products



BASF Automotive Refinish Solutions has launched two new additives for its Onyx HD line in the U.S. and Canada. Hydrobase Slow (HB004) and Hydromix Slow (HB040) complement the waterborne basecoat system Onyx HD, which belongs to the R-M brand of BASF Coatings.

These slower additives were developed to improve the flexibility of Onyx HD. Used at high temperatures and lower humidity, HB004 and HB040 are designed to help control the drying process.

Extreme Adhesives rolls out new products



Extreme SignWelder Adhesives for sign builders from Extreme Adhesives Inc. is a series of high performance adhesives designed to bond substrates such as aluminum, steel and stainless, and plastics including acrylics, polycarbonates, trimcap and PVC. The adhesives are tack-free, dry hard and provide strength and durability making them suitable for holding up to out door environments and harsh weather conditions.

Extreme 2151 Thermally Con­ductive Epoxy from Extreme Adhesives provides a strong and durable, high impact bond designed to improve heat transfer between a wide range of substrates, metals, silica, aluminum and sapphire. The epoxy is ideal for the stacking of heat sensitive materials, allowing for a variety of applications, including circuit boards, heat sinks, magnets and coils.

New composite mold release



Mold Release Coating 7575 from Huron Technologies has proven to maintain details in the compression molding process using vinyl ester resins. The new mold release coating is replacing older, outdated products that were not as effective in capturing mold details. Mold Release Coating 7575 also provides less build-up on the mold surface, less clean up and maintenance and ease of release during the molding process. The new mold release coating lends itself to molding products that must stand up to harsh, corrosive environments. This includes chemical containers, ball and butterfly valves, wind turbine blades, pump housings, functional building panels and other products that resist corrosion during normal use.
