Expo Preview: American Coatings Show 2010

The second American Coatings Show (ACS) will be held in Charlotte, NC from April 13-15, 2010. The number of exhibitors and the size of the venue are already larger than they were at the first show in 2008.

The American Coatings Show and Conference return to Charlotte, NC in April. Two years ago the ACS drew some 5,600 attendees while 750 took part in the conference.

When the American Coatings Show (ACS) opened in Charlotte, NC back in 2008, it marked the beginning of a new era for the coatings industry in the U.S. The event was hosted and organized by the National Paint and Coatings Association (NPCA)—which recently changed its name to the American Coatings Association—and Hanover, Germany-based Vincentz Network, while the coordination of the trade show was overseen by NurnbergMesse North America based in Atlanta, a U.S. subsidiary of NurnbergMesse in Germany.

After much anticipation the event lived up to the hype. Approximately 5,600 visitors from roughly 48 countries were on hand to gather information from the 331 exhibitors who displayed a comprehensive range of products and services related to all aspects of paint and coatings formulation in 68,000 square feet of exhibition space. Operating every other year opposite the European Coatings Show (ECS), ACS returns to Charlotte this year from April 13-15 and the number of exhibitors and the size of the venue has already surpassed 2008 figures.

American Coatings Conference

The American Coatings Conference begins on April 12, 2010, one day before the American Coatings Show opens. This year’s conference has been expanded due to the large number of abstracts submitted—more than 200. Three days and 16 sessions of 96 presentations will provide formulation specialists with an in-depth and wide-ranging perspective into the newest trends and technologies in developing raw materials for coatings. Approximately 30 presentations will be offered during interactive poster sessions.

The presentation sessions will each feature six presentations and highlight different topics including:
• Current developments in materials for specific applications, such as architectural coatings, automotive coatings, protective coatings or wood coatings;
• Important groups of raw materials, such as polyurethanes; and
• Innovative testing and measuring methods.

Six focus sessions will be devoted to special topics that are the subjects of intense discussion in coatings research today. These include:
• Nanotechnology in Coatings
• Smart Coatings
• Biobased Coatings
• Functional Coatings & Materials
• Waterborne Coatings I & II
