PPG Industries commercial coatings group and the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) have named ATC Trailers, Inc., of Nappanee, Ind. – a manufacturer of custom-built, precision trailers – as the recipient of the fourth annual Green Manufacturing Award. The honor was presented during NATM’s 26th annual Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas last month. The award recognizes the NATM member with the year’s best solution or innovation that positively affects the environment. Lucas Landis, ATC Trailers marketing director, accepted the prize on behalf of company CEO and Founder Steve Brenneman.
“I was surprised and pleased,” Brenneman said, upon being informed of the award. “We make a genuine effort to be environmentally aware. One of our core values is to enhance the communities we are part of, and resource sustainability and environmental protection are top priorities for achieving that. It is gratifying to be recognized for our efforts.”
ATC Trailers has been in business for more than 13 years, building high-quality custom work and recreational trailers in an array of configurations and styles. ATC was recognized among Indiana Companies to Watch in 2013 as a result of its fast growth in the field. The company won the Green Manufacturing Award for its improvements in the areas of waste diversion, energy efficiency and water and air quality. Specific advances include:
Recycling or reusing all wood and metal scraps;
Daily collection and recycling of paper and plastic items;
A continuing commitment to a lean manufacturing protocol that has cut energy consumption by 50 percent in three years;
Reducing water runoff; and
Enhancing interior ventilation systems.
In addition, ATC employs a full-time LEED-accredited professional on the premises.
ATC is also community-focused and selected Goshen Farmer’s Market in nearby Goshen, Ind., as the beneficiary of the cash donation associated with the award. The Goshen Farmer’s Market features locally grown and fashioned products to promote and educate the community about agricultural, environmental and economic sustainability.
PPG's commercial coatings group teamed with the NATM to co-sponsor the Green Manufacturing Award as part of PPG’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection. Contenders for the award are judged on case studies in which they establish improved, ecologically-conscious performance in their operations. A company must be an NATM member in good standing and provide documentation of the "green" initiatives or improvements it has made to qualify for the competition.
“PPG has long been a strong proponent of environmental protection,” said Ron Yarnell, PPG OEM (original equipment manufacturer) sales manager. “We and the NATM want to see continuous improvements in the daily operations of our organization’s members. We established the Green Manufacturing Award to recognize the programs—both short- and long-term—that NATM members are initiating. ATC Trailers has taken significant steps to do its part. Its concern for our environment and our community is obvious, and we are pleased to honor ATC.”
The NATM represents manufacturers of light- and medium-duty trailers as well as a wide range of suppliers to the industry. The organization promotes universal recognition of safety and quality in trailer manufacturing to the trailer industry and the general public. NATM works to improve the trailer industry through the promotion of compliance with its Guidelines and other initiatives. The association has more than 800 member companies in the United States, Canada, Mexico and other countries.
