LORD Corporation has announced that the Penn State Behrend supermileage team, sponsored by LORD, finished first place at the SAE International Supermileage competition held June 6-7. This contest between engineering and technology students from various universities all over the world features a challenging design project to develop and construct the most fuel-efficient single-person vehicle. Penn State’s top run of the day of 1,290 mpg and a high score on its vehicle’s design report by reviewers led the school to finish as the winning team out of a field of 28.
The vehicles are required to run a specified course, with the vehicle obtaining the highest combined miles per gallon rating and design segment points winning the event. The purpose of this competition is to challenge students to set a world-fuel economy record and increase public awareness of fuel economy.
An estimated 5,000 hours were dedicated to work on the vehicle’s engine, body shape and packaging of all of its components. LORD employees assisting on the team include Katie Burbules, Kathleen Murzynski, John Pearson and Taylor Pearson. Both Burbles and John Pearson were drivers of the car.
