Gelest, Inc. has released its “Technical Guide for Performance and Regulatory Compliance of BIOSAFE Organosilane Antimicrobials.” The Technical Guide addresses the comparative efficacy of BIOSAFE antimicrobials vs. other antimicrobial technologies, applications, US EPA/FIFRA compliance, and additional information supporting BIOSAFE antimicrobial as a safe and effective mode of controlling microorganisms.
Microbes are problematic in many industries including textiles for activewear, products for sports and leisure, architectural paints and coatings, and HVAC systems for IAQ (indoor environmental quality). Silicon-based antimicrobials perform differently than traditional antimicrobials. Most antimicrobials poison cells by being metabolized by the cell. Silicon-based, BIOSAFE antimicrobial imparts bacteriostatic, fungistatic and algistatic properties and binds to substrates with silanol reactivity, assembling on surfaces into a layer of densely packed molecules with a strong positive charge. This positive charge, along with its C18 chains, physically ruptures the cell wall, causing cell lysis, and nothing is transferred or absorbed.
