Dr. Mike O’Donoghue and Vijay Datta, distinguished scientists in AkzoNobel’s Protective Coatings business, were presented with two Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) publication awards at the 2015 SSPC GreenCOAT show, during the annual SSPC Business Meeting and Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Director of Engineering and Technical Services, Dr. O’Donoghue, and Technical Leadership and Business Development Manager, Mr. Datta, are amongst the coatings industry’s’ most notable and recognized technical authors and leaders, with 13 SSPC publication awards to their credit. Their two 2014 submissions to the association’s official magazine, Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings (JPCL), received the following coveted awards:
Upon receipt of the awards, Dr. O’Donoghue and Mr. Datta said, “It is an honor for us and our diverse group of co-authors to receive these awards. These publications focus on winning technologies from AkzoNobel which are front and center in present day industry discussion and debate. Our technical leadership role in AkzoNobel is an exhilarating one that provides innovative performance, safety, and sustainable solutions for our customers.”
The duo also presented a white paper at the 2015 SSPC GreenCOAT show that discussed the topic of shale oil and high performance coatings entitled, “Close Encounters of the Third ‘Crude Oil’ Kind,” on Thursday, February 5th.
Dr. O’Donoghue is a 33-year veteran of the protective coatings industry, joining International Paint in 1982, and then moving to Devoe High Performance Coatings Canada in 1984. His technological contributions are extensive, including the co-development with Vijay Datta of an anti-slip coating for structural steel and an internal secondary containment for above ground storage tanks using unique epoxy technology. Dr. O’Donoghue was recently recognized by SSPC as one of the coatings industry’s top 25 leaders and thinkers of the past 25 years for his advancement of industry knowledge. He holds a 1st Class Honours B.Sc. in Chemistry and a Ph.D in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Surrey, England.
Vijay Datta, a 44-year veteran of the marine and protective coatings industry, joined Devoe and Reynolds Company in 1971. Among his many significant technological accomplishments, Mr. Datta was instrumental in the development of Devoe Bar Rust 235, a surface tolerant, low-temperature cure epoxy coating which is now widely used as a protective coating in shop-application. Mr. Datta holds a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and is a member of the Society for Protective Coatings, National Association of Corrosion Engineers and the National Paint and Coating Association.
AkzoNobel’s Protective Coatings Director – North America, Chris Tiernay, added, “We are once again extremely proud of Mike and Vijay and their teams, for their exceptional scientific contributions and industry leadership that continue to bring new customer-driven technologies to the marketplace. The awards are one more example of our ongoing commitment to excellence―from product concept, to lab testing and validation, to manufacturing and performance in the field.”
