Job Description
Valspar is continuing to leverage its global leadership in coatings innovation and technology to exceed the changing needs of our customers. As part of Valspar’s commitment to develop new technologies and products, we are expanding and investing in the Valspar Applied Science and Technology Center (VAST) in Minneapolis, MN to provide a Best-In-Class facility to bring innovative solutions to market. This position will play a key role in our technology investment strategy.


Within the Powder Coatings department, plans and performs the technical research, development, and commercialization process. Responsibilities may include working with multiple technologies, leading multiple projects of moderate scope, and coordinating the patent process for projects.


•Serves as a lead to staff to include assigning and monitoring work and providing direction.

•Plans and leads multiple technical research projects, investigations, and the commercialization process based on project objectives, budget, and timelines; projects are typically moderate in scale and complexity.

•Applies a thorough understanding of Valspar, industry, and competitor technologies, application methods, products, and manufacturing processes regarding the research and development of new formulas; has developed products involving multiple technologies.

•Reads and interprets patents and regulations, examines new product concepts and technology, and determines how to improve or utilize technologies; generally has obtained at least one patent.

•Assists with developing appropriate policies and procedures to ensure compliance with research and development principles and practices and applicable laws, rules, and regulations; monitors compliance with these areas.

•Oversees and/or serves as the primary contact for highly technical and complex internal or external questions and concerns regarding the development process and project development.

•Serves as a team member for comprehensive projects to provide technical management and direction to product development, quality control, manufacturing processes, and other operations; may lead sub-sets of larger projects.

•May supervise staff to include hiring, training, evaluating performance, providing compensation recommendations, and determining disciplinary actions when necessary.

•Performs other duties as assigned.

Desired Skills and Expertise


•Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or equivalent education and experience. PhD preferred.

•Requires 10+ years of Powder Coatings experience with exposure to all different types of industrial markets.


•Prioritizing and assigning work;

•Serving as an expert in multiple technologies;

•Leading technical research and development projects;

•Applying comprehensive application methods and procedures;

•Interpreting and applying department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations;

•Solving complex technical problems and recommending solutions;

•Utilizing technical project management concepts;

•Commercializing products with multiple technologies;

•PC skills; Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); and other applicable applications;

•Communicating with co-workers to provide and receive direction.
