Job Description:
This position will evaluate, develop and improve coating applications including; liquid, e-coat and powder paint materials and processes in addition to researching emerging technologies to optimize quality, cost and performance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Assists the Operations, Product Engineering and Industrial Design teams with the development, justification, and execution of long range plans to meet corporate objectives, including transitioning to right chemicals, processes and systems.
• Research, develop and implement materials, tools and processes to improve coatings performance, including but not limited to quality, uptime and cost.
• Applies diversified knowledge of materials, chemistry and processing to support new product development, flawless execution of new product introduction as well warranty reduction activities as they relate to coated parts.
• Considerable creativity and initiative is required providing troubleshooting support to coating processes and implement effective countermeasures.
• Development of process control plans in all coatings process areas.
• Function as coatings technical liaison between purchasing, engineering, manufacturing and suppliers to resolve quality issues, drive appearance improvement and defect reduction.
• Implement and monitor advanced quality planning and provide technical support when and where needed.
• Research new materials, processes & manufacturing technologies, coordinate procurement and trials as well support implementation into manufacturing.
• Asses current materials, processes and systems used in Product Design as well in Manufacturing and create or support the creation of a roadmap when proposing to transition to new and improved materials or processes.
• Promote quality, continuous improvement, preventative maintenance, good housekeeping, and safety practices.
Skills & Knowledge:
• BS / MS degree in Chemical Engineering
• 7+ years related experience, experience with new system installation preferred
Technical Skills:
• DFMEA and PFMEA development and assessment
• Demonstrated expertise in automotive component coatings technology and processes. Experience with manual and automated applications.
• Strong computer skills with ability to quickly learn new software/applications
• Value Stream Mapping and Process Optimization
• Project management - plan, develop and execute
• High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult.
