Job Description:
The Head Chemist is responsible for all activities relating to the testing, development, and implementation of new or improved athletic surface coatings (tennis court, basketball and running tracks) for product field application. This position analyzes all products, materials and formulas to assure they meet corporate quality and safety standards and assure customer satisfaction. Duties:
- Formulates coatings to solve problems, increase sales and enhance the current product line
- Supervises and prepares all test and trial formulations to direct formulation of products
- Design and run laboratory experiments with both a high level of scientific accuracy and pragmatic sensibility
- Set-up, calibrate, adjust and operate laboratory equipment and instruments
- Prepare formulations according to standards
- Test materials used as ingredients in coatings for characteristics such as stability, viscosity, density, absorption,melting or flash point
- Supervises test samples conducted in-house and in field operations
- Performs raw material evaluations and/or formula engineering for cost reduction
- Performs comparative testing to identify strengths/weaknesses versus competitive products
- Directs activities of Jr. Chemist and/or Lab Technicians
- Formulate and accurately record all testing results
- Meet with Lab Director and Product Development personnel to assess the progress of on-going projects and to receive new assignments.
- Keep accurate journal of all prearranged testing with outside testing laboratories
- Interact with division senior management to help clarify customer requirements.
- Overnight travel to customer sites/trade shows/suppliers as needed.
- Enter accurate data into computer system for future referencing, prepares graphs and charts
- Makes full use of acquired skills, abilities and quality checking techniques to help respond to customer requirements.
- Assures personnel work in a safe & efficient manner.
Desired Skills and Expertise:
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and five + years’ related experience as a coatings formula chemist specializing in water-based coatings, or
- 10+ years’ experience as a coatings formula chemist specializing in water-based coatings, without a Chemistry degree
- Experience in leading, coaching, developing and managing department personnel
- Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures are required as a condition of employment
- Accurately produce reports to record all formula/testing information for future assessments
- Must strictly adhere to prescribed policies & procedures
