Akzo Nobel Coatings International B.V. has received a patent for coating composition comprised of an oxidatively drying binder and a reactive diluent, wherein at least a part of the diluent is an ester of malonic acid, the ester is comprised of a building block derived from an aldehyde coupled to the malonate backbone by a Knoevenagel reaction, wherein the aldehyde-derived building block is selected from the group consisting of citronellal, furfural, isobutyraldehyde, benzylaldehyde, anisaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde.
