PPG Industries' packaging coatings business has launched NUTRISHIELD new-generation coatings for the food-can industry and Nutrishield SOLISTA internal protective spray coatings for drawn and wall-ironed food cans. Nutrishield brand products are PPG’s new generation of food-can coatings, designed to fulfil can-makers’ and brand-owners’ needs regarding enhanced food-contact regulatory requirements.
The breakthrough Nutrishield Solista technology – Bisphenol A non-intent (BPA-NI, or with no BPA intentionally added) spray coatings for drawn and wall-ironed food cans – is the first BPA-NI high-performance solution for the food-can industry approved to pack ready meals, soups and infant foods such as milk. The coatings comply with North American and European regulations and are food-contact compliant, certified by independent institutes.
“Major brand owners already recognize Nutrishield Solista spray coatings as the leading new-generation coating solutions, thanks to their enhanced characteristics for flavour neutrality, excellent pack and sulphur resistance, and meat-release properties,” said Todd White, PPG global segments and marketing director, packaging coatings. “Nutrishield Solista internal spray coatings are approved for a wide variety of food packs, providing high-performance protection against a broad range of foods to meet brand-owners’ evolving requirements.”
Suitable for low- to high-pH and fatty foods, Nutrishield Solista spray coatings also have enhanced flavour-neutral properties to help easily affected products pass extensive flavour tests. They are ideal for soups, meat-based meals, various vegetables, tomato-based sauces and foods, and pet foods.
“The patented Nutrishield Solista internal spray coatings technology resulted from intensive research and development that involved extensive testing, pack-testing and industrial scale-up trials,” said Charles Turner, PPG global technical director, packaging coatings. “They are suitable for all two-piece drawn and wall-ironed can sizes, and they can be introduced to food-can-makers’ lines that use standard equipment without major modifications.
“Additionally, Nutrishield Solista coatings cover all weight specifications and exhibit excellent cure robustness,” he said.
More than 3 billion food cans will have been coated with Nutrishield Solista spray coatings by the end of 2015. The coatings are now available commercially in the U.S. and were launched in Europe over the last year, and they are ready for global reach and supply with production capacity in all regions and a comprehensive and experienced cross-regional technical team with expertise in can making and coating application for the food industry.
PPG produces Nutrishield Solista coatings in vessels dedicated to the manufacture of BPA-NI spray. The product line comprises the PPG4553 series, PPG4220 series and PPG4600 series, in gold, buff and grey versions.
In addition, PPG offers a complete new-generation system for drawn and wall-ironed food cans, with BPA-NI PPG Washcoat (PPG5200 series), fully compatible with Nutrishield Solista internal spray coatings.
