PPG has expanded its SEMCO high volume automated mixer line with two new heavy-duty mixers for precision mixing of higher viscosity, multicomponent adhesives, sealants and other chemicals in SEMKIT packages. The Semco model 1088HD mixer and Semco 1188HD mixer are equipped with robust motors to thoroughly mix high viscosity aerospace adhesives, while the Semco 1188HD mixer has added capability for use in potentially volatile and corrosive environments, like those encountered by aircraft carrier maintenance operations.
According to Goldi Singh, PPG global product development and engineering manager for aerospace packaging, PPG designed the new heavy-duty mixers with stronger motors that can manage the mixing process for high viscosity chemicals, especially aerospace adhesives.
“With 2016’s successful launch of the Semco 1088 high volume chemical mixer, our customers expressed a need for its quality and productivity benefits for more rigorous environments and materials,” Singh said. “We fortified the Semco 1088 mixer with a stronger motor and holding components to manage the mixing process and ensure a full, thorough mix even with high viscosity material. Mixing high viscosity chemicals is no longer a challenge with the new Semco 1088HD and 1188HD mixers.”
The Semco 1088HD and 1188HD mixers are equipped with a holder feature that prevents the cartridge from spinning during operation, which is common when mixing high viscosity materials with other types of mixers. Operators simply insert the Semkit package into the machine, tighten the cartridge holder and run the machine. The mixers operate until the target stroke count is achieved.
The Semco 1188HD mixer is ATEX Class II rated for use in potentially volatile environments. Additionally, it carries specific salt fog resistance for use in some of the world’s most corrosive environments.
Designed for both barrier style and injection style Semkit cartridges, Semco 1088, 1088HD and 1188HD mixers can produce homogeneous chemical distribution with one-touch adjustment for the five most common Semkit package configurations used in the aerospace industry. In addition, they can automatically inject and evenly distribute the correct amount of catalyst into a prefilled injection style Semkit package, which is required for the material to meet application and performance requirements.
