ACS Wraps Up On High Note

The biennial American Coatings Show  (ACS) was held Tuesday, April 12 - Thursday, April 14 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The show’s organizers, Vincentz Network and the American Coatings Associaton (ACS), said the fifth edition of the ACS was its most successful to date. While having already broken all previous records for exhibit floor size, and number of exhibitors, registration numbers have now broken previous records, the organizers stated.

The final numbers are as follows:

• Registration numbers reached 9,100
• 559 companies exhibited in more than 130,000 sq. ft. of booth space.

“ACS 2016 exhibitors have indicated very positive experiences regarding new leads, and a record number of industry professionals are attending this year. We remain committed to our goal of bringing the industry a top-notch platform for business exchange, technological innovation and professional development. Our goal is to continuously increase the quality of the experience for both exhibitors and attendees,” Cheryl Matthews, vice president, events & expositions, for the American Coatings Association said in a press release.

Location, location, location

For many exhibitors the location of the ACS is a huge selling point.

“We were very pleased with the decision to have the show in Indianapolis,” said Gary Strauss, president of Micro Powders. “It’s an easy city to get around and close to major coatings markets. The event seemed to be well organized, especially registration and securing badges.”

Iain Muirhead, engineering manager at Powder Technologies, Inc. agreed this year’s ACS was well organized with a good location. “The floor plan was better laid out than other shows. There was plenty of room and access around each booth for viewing and discussions with potential clients.”

“I think Indianapolis is a great city for this show, and the venue worked out well. Dow looks forward to returning to Indianapolis in 2018,” said Sylvia Insogna, North America marketing director for Dow Coating Materials.

“The American Coatings Show was excellent, and Indianapolis was a fantastic location,” said Lauren Hultz, communications manager, North America, Clariant Corp. “Our team was pleased with the traffic on the show floor.”

Record Attendace
The record attendance numbers were noted by exhibitors and attendees alike, who said they were generally pleased with the turnout.

“The American Coatings Show attracts a very large and diverse cross-section of coatings professionals in North America, and in this respect, the ACS 2016 did not disappoint.  The show certainly has grown since its inception, with a record number of exhibitors showcasing their technologies,” Julie Vaughn, VP marketing and business development, Emerald Performance Materials. “The energy at this year’s show was palpable – certainly a reflection of the optimistic outlook on the state of the coatings industry today.”

Emerald Performance Materials reported that this year’s ACS was a “huge success.” “We were very pleased with the attendance at this year’s ACS overall,” said Vaughn. “The statistics reported by the ACA and Vincentz Network certainly bear that out, and this was also evident in the traffic we saw on the show floor and at our booth as an exhibitor throughout the three-day event.”

“The show seemed very well attended with a wide array of exhibitors; however, the exhibition booths appeared to be a bit scaled back from previous years,” noted Torey Adams, business development and marketing – Coatings & Polymers, Croda, Inc. “Overall, I was pleased with the turnout. This led to a decent amount of foot traffic at our booth. I liked the arrangement of the booths which promoted diversity in the types of companies and their offerings.”

For Sun Chemical the American Coatings Show is the most significant coatings show in North America in terms of attendance, technical papers and exhibitors. “It is clear based on this year’s record breaking numbers that many of the industry’s leading companies and experts agree,” said  Michael T. Venturini, global marketing manager, Coatings, Sun Chemical. “Sun Chemical was proud to be a major contributor to the event.”

“The show was well-attended and provided a great platform to discuss our product innovation and commitment to sustainability,” said Hultz. “The American Coatings Show gives us a forum to share Clariant’s story and our sustainable solutions with our customers in the paint and coatings industry. We were able to share information about the many sustainable and innovative products we offer for automotive, decorative and industrial coatings, including our quinacridone pigments based on renewable raw materials and our Easily Dispersible Pigments, micronized waxes, halogen-free flame retardants, dispersing agents, and emulsifiers.”

First time exhibitor Keim Additec was happy with their descision to exhibit at ACS. "The ACS was a great success for us with reasonable volumes of contacts and many good leads," said Dave Grabacki, president of Keim Additec. The wide range of inquiries made it a very productive event for us."

Micro Powders said they were happy with the turnout. “We had a nice steady flow of attendees walking the floor and visiting our booth,” said Strauss. “This was one of our more successful shows with regards to customer and prospect interaction. There seemed to be more companies having receptions and social hours on the floor which added to the spirit of the event. ACS sponsoring a luncheon for the convention floor was very nice as well.”

According to Dow, the turnout was impressive with great representation across a broad spectrum of coatings suppliers and customers. “This show continues to provide value to the industry as it brings key players together, which is valuable to pushing the boundaries of innovation in this space,” Insogna added. “I most enjoy meeting with our customers and feeling the pulse of the industry to get a sense for the latest trends and innovations.”

Networking opportunities
For Dow, this year's ACS was an exciting one, providing a great opportunity to network with customers. “With a variety of coatings industry leaders present at this show, attending provides Dow with a great opportunity to catch up with customers, explore new trends, and showcase our new products in addition to sharing existing technologies,” Insogna noted.

“The show provides an excellent opportunity to network with technical and sales personnel, potential and current customers, suppliers of other raw materials, across the industry all in one place – and we took full advantage of this opportunity,” said Vaughn. “As an exhibitor, while we had many pre-scheduled meetings, we also had the opportunity to meet new people and engage in high quality discussions about  the challenges they are facing, as they look to develop the next generation products and push the performance envelope.    These types of conversations are very valuable and provide the life blood of innovation so critical to our company, and to the industry in general.”

Sun Chemical was pleased not only with the large attendance numbers but also by the wide array of people that were able to attend. “The central location and strong exhibitors attracted a large number of technical visitors,” said Venturini. “For Sun Chemical the show was overwhelmingly positive and we feel that there are many benefits to attending and participating in the show. It was a great venue to showcase Sun Chemical’s technical expertise and how we can provide a full range of resins and pigments that are tailor made for any coatings application to both our customers and prospective customers alike. The show is a unique opportunity to have technical discussions on a variety of innovative topics with coatings producers from almost every region of the world.”
