Thriving as a solution provider in the Aerospace industry requires an unrelenting commitment to quality and dedication to expertise. For successful businesses this meritocratic, highly competitive field, reputations are earned slowly and customer trust is never taken for granted.
Based in San Marcos, Texas, Specialized Aero is an FAA accredited part 145 repair station that covers everything from aircraft welding and recovery operations to preventative maintenance and inspections. The refinish and refurbish side of the operation, known as Tejas Aero, has built a national reputation for expert service and attention to detail.
Owner Travis Ahlhorn said his team of nearly 30 takes pride in successfully executing challenging projects; like a recently refinished De Havilland Beaver from Alaska, which Ahlhorn said required a careful coating selection.
“Using top-quality paints was critical,” said Ahlhorn. “When the aircraft returns to Alaska, it will be exposed to extreme elements such as freezing temperatures and salt water.”
To deliver a system capable of standing up to Alaskan elements, without sacrificing aesthetic value, Ahlhorn selected Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings High Solids Corrosion Resistant Epoxy Primer CM0483928 for the considerable amount of corrosion resistance necessary. Chrome Hazard Free Epoxy Primer CM0483787 was also used as an undercoat for color holdout and uniformity.
Ahlhorn used SKYscapes 850 Series Rocket Red Basecoat for the bright and brilliant custom paint scheme. Ahlhorn also selected SKYscapes CM0850180 Clearcoat due to its UV and durability ratings to withstand the harsh environment this aircraft will be subjected to.
“They are good products to work with and we get great customer support and training from Sherwin-Williams and their suppliers,” said Ahlhorn.
The result is a visually striking, unique aircraft.
Tejas partners with Blend Supply, a 20-plus year Sherwin-Williams distributor for many of its coatings, tools and refinishing supplies.
“Specialized Aero are absolute true artisans and craftsmen in their respective field of aviation and refinish,” said Jesse Castillo of Blend Supply.
“It was great to be a part of this project. Specialized Aero selected some excellent products that should provide outstanding performance in the unique Alaskan environment,” added Michael Freeman, North American distribution and customer service manager, Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings. “Our distributors are great partners in the process. Blend Supply provided amazing support for a unique endeavor.”
