    [body] => Hardide plc's Hardide-A coating has been selected for use on components for the new F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, the company announced.

Following extensive testing, Hardide-A coating has been approved for use on drag chute components for the F-35A CTOL (conventional take-off and landing) variant being manufactured by Lockheed Martin.

For these specific components, Hardide-A is being used in place of HVOF (high-velocity oxy-fuel) thermal spray coatings.

Hardide-A has been developed specifically to meet the needs of the aerospace industry and is an environmentally compliant and technically superior replacement for HVOF and hard chrome plating. The coating has demonstrated outstanding performance under corrosive conditions. This opens up applications in high load and corrosive conditions associated with several aircraft types.

The F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole fighters. The fifth-generation combat aircraft is designed to perform ground-attack and air-superiority missions. Over 455 aircraft have been built so far with the RAF and Royal Navy planning to take 138.

Hardide Coatings said it was awarded Nadcap Merit status for coatings.

Hardide Coatings, which develops, manufactures and applies advanced technology tungsten/tungsten carbide metal matrix coatings to engineering components across a range of industries including aerospace, has held Nadcap accreditation since 2017. 
 
Instead of having its next Nadcap audit in 12 months, Hardide Coatings was granted an accreditation that lasts until Jan. 31, 2021.
 
“Validating compliance to industry standards, best practices and customer requirements, Nadcap has long been incorporated by the aerospace industry into their risk mitigation activity," said Michael J. Hayward, EVP and chief operating officer at the Performance Review Institute. Product innovation aimed at making the aerospace industry more sustainable has resulted in the launch of a new chromate-free exterior primer developed by AkzoNobel and Airbus.
 
Newly qualified by Airbus and now included in the aircraft manufacturer's specifications, Aerodur HS 2121 is part of AkzoNobel's latest generation of decorative and selectively strippable systems for aircraft exteriors. In addition to being free from chromates, the new primer provides users with numerous performance, appearance and application benefits.
 
Designed to be applied at the final assembly stage to virtually all external aircraft surfaces, it offers increased adhesion without pre-treatment (also on rivets), improved corrosion performance and flexibility, and better visual coverage. It also has enhanced wetting properties, which means less primer needs to be applied, saving time and improving efficiency.

Sto Corp. announced the introduction of its new StoColor Dryonic exterior coating, which provides long-term moisture protection for virtually any substrate, to the North American market.
 
The exterior coating, which is part of the recently announced Sto Intelligent Technology + Design (iQ) coatings program (also referred to as iQ Technology), offers a wide range of design possibilities as well as optimum durability, color stability and sustainability.  
   
StoColor Dryonic, like Sto’s other iQ Technology coatings, is modeled on principles found in nature. The shell of the African fog-basking beetle, covered in countless microscopic bumps, was the inspiration for the operating principle of this biomimetic coating. StoColor Dryonic features a unique microtextured surface like that of the beetle’s shell.  Rain and condensation cannot collect on this surface, preventing absorption of moisture by the facade.  This allows the surface to dry in record time, depriving algae and fungi of the nutrients they need to grow.  This long-lasting biomimetic effect, which even works with very intense color shades, keeps the facade surface clean and dry.  
 
“As coatings are constantly exposed to the elements, they run the risk of fading and being attacked by microorganisms,” said Amanda Poole, associate product manager for coatings at Sto Corp. “StoColor Dryonic helps to safeguard against algae and fungi to provide a high level of durability along with aesthetic appeal.”
 
The coating was first introduced by Sto in Germany and was awarded the Innovation Award of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA in Europe in 2015.  In addition, it was designated the clear winner in a comparison test performed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability of five façade coatings with regard to their drying properties.  The test concluded that StoColor Dryonic “is characterized by the lowest condensate load near the surface, the lowest water absorption in the film, and the fastest drying time [...].”
 
StoColor Dryonic can be applied to all common substrates and is extremely robust. Whereas with conventional highly pigmented coatings, there is a risk of extender material breakdown (as they are easily scuffed), this new coating is much more resistant, which is an advantage in heavily frequented zones such as building entrances.

The shell of the African fog-basking beetle, covered in countless microscopic bumps, was the inspiration for the operating principle of this biomimetic coating. StoColor Dryonic features a unique microtextured surface like that of the beetle’s shell.  Rain and condensation cannot collect on this surface, preventing absorption of moisture by the facade.  This allows the surface to dry in record time, depriving algae and fungi of the nutrients they need to grow.  This long-lasting biomimetic effect, which even works with very intense color shades, keeps the facade surface clean and dry.  
 
“As coatings are constantly exposed to the elements, they run the risk of fading and being attacked by microorganisms,” said Amanda Poole, associate product manager for coatings at Sto Corp. “StoColor Dryonic helps to safeguard against algae and fungi to provide a high level of durability along with aesthetic appeal.”
 
The coating was first introduced by Sto in Germany and was awarded the Innovation Award of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA in Europe in 2015.  In addition, it was designated the clear winner in a comparison test performed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability of five façade coatings with regard to their drying properties.  The test concluded that StoColor Dryonic “is characterized by the lowest condensate load near the surface, the lowest water absorption in the film, and the fastest drying time [...].”
 
StoColor Dryonic can be applied to all common substrates and is extremely robust. Whereas with conventional highly pigmented coatings, there is a risk of extender material breakdown (as they are easily scuffed), this new coating is much more resistant, which is an advantage in heavily frequented zones such as building entrances.
