    [body] => Tnemec Company, Inc. introduced three chemical-resistant polymer concretes for use on new or existing surfaces.

The LavaCrete series of high-performance polymer concretes can be applied and returned to service the same or next day and can cure at temperatures down to 40°F, according to Dan O’Toole, director of sales-Food, Beverage and Specialty Markets.

“LavaCrete products are all about speed of installation and chemical resistance,” O’Toole said. “These products are ideal for repairing heavily deteriorated concrete surfaces found in facilities where acid drips are common, such as pickling and plating plants, and for casting trenches, sumps, pads or secondary containment structures.”

Specific LavaCrete polymer concrete products include: “Because of their quick cure times, these products are often used in food processing plants where return-to-service time is measured in hours,” O’Toole said. “LavaCrete is also an industry standard for vibration-dampening, corrosion-resistant grouting material under the baseplates of motors and pumps.” 

LavaCrete polymer concretes provide three times the bond of normal concrete when applied over surfaces prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP13/NACE 6 Surface Preparation of Concrete and ICRI Technical Guidelines. LavaCrete resists thermal shock and shrinkage and can be installed up to 10 inches in a single pour.

“With LavaCrete, corrosion protection is provided throughout the entire pour, regardless of its thickness,” O’Toole said. “Once the polymer concrete is in place, no additional coatings are required and return to service is usually within hours.”

The new website was designed to accommodate both frequent users and users who are not as familiar with Tnemec products, according to Mark Thomas, VP of marketing.

“The new Tnemec.com will be much easier for our customers to navigate and use,” Thomas said. “Our number one goal for the new website was for customers to have the ability to navigate the website more efficiently and quickly get them the information they need.”

Along with being more user-friendly, the new site is now easier to view and use on mobile devices, too, according to Thomas.

“Many of our customers are on the road or at job sites a lot of the time, so the new website will be very useful for them wherever they are," he said.

The website also includes more advanced product filtering capabilities, which makes it easier for new and returning customers to find the right product for their project. Visitors can locate a high-performance coating product based on chemical exposure, substrate and/or generic type.

“We want our website to guide the user towards getting a quality coating or lining applied to their structures,” Thomas said. “We think the new Tnemec.com accomplishes this, while also being more visually pleasing and representative of our brand and mission.”

Other features on the new website include access to hundreds of Tnemec project profiles, an updated color swatch request tool and Tnemec’s interactive water tank design tool, Tank3D.

“Many of the pages on the site are completely new, including our ‘Why Tnemec’ and ‘Leadership + Personnel’ pages,” Thomas said. “Just like our innovative product development process and our dedicated technical service in the field, this site is the result of lots of hard work behind the scenes and our company prides itself on these kinds of efforts.”

Tnemec celebrated the launch of the new website on Aug. 2, 2019, at the company’s main manufacturing facility in North Kansas City, Missouri. The company plans to continue making future improvements to Tnemec.com based on the needs of its customers. Notably, the mixing, pumping, installation and troweling of mixes with high proportions of supplementary cementitious materials and/or difficult aggregates become much more straightforward.

MasterEase was used for the recently finished high-rise building “Marienturm” in Frankfurt, Germany.

“It enabled us to reduce the viscosity of the concrete – its stickiness – and to improve its workability,” said Sebastian Dittmar, head of Application Technology Germany at the Construction Chemicals unit of Master Builders Solutions. “So, we could easily pump the concrete up to the required height.”

“We are highly satisfied with the result. MasterEase is the ideal plasticizer for extreme pumping heights, as in the case of the Marienturm: The admixture reduces viscosity by up to 30 percent and provides a precise early strength that remains available even during extended work cycles,” added Andreas Arbeiter, managing director of ready-mix producer Sehring Beton.  

The reduction in viscosity also facilitates surface troweling – an added benefit for ready-mix producers, but likewise in precast production or the casting of concrete slabs. In this way, MasterEase saves time and costs in each construction project, increases the utilization of vehicles and machinery, and reduces the wear-and-tear of mixers, pumps and piping.

Another product used for the construction of the Marienturm is Master X-Seed, which will also be in the focus of the ICCC and the RheoCon2. With Master X-Seed, a liquid hardening accelerator, concrete hardens up to 10 times faster than without admixture. Sebastian Dittmar, Head of Application Technology Germany at the Construction Chemicals unit of BASF, considers Master X-Seed one of Master Builders Solutions’ key innovations in recent years: “Its unique effect really sets Master X-Seed apart, and it has become a reliable essential across a wide variety of application areas. Constructing the Marienturm, Master X-Seed enabled us to obtain significantly earlier formwork removal and thus contributed to a faster construction progress.”

Another customer success story enabled by the usage of Master X-Seed is the example of fdu Betonwerke: this German precast manufacturer was able to achieve a 50 percent reduction in concrete hardening time through the use of Master X-Seed*. The high early strength of the concrete enables fdu to reduce the energy-intensive heat treatment of the fresh concrete, reducing production energy costs by up to 15 percent per site.

“The formworks for concrete elements usually have to remain in the heat chamber for 12 hours to harden," said Thomas Beike, managing director fdu Betonwerke. "That is time-, energy- and cost-intensive. With Master X-Seed, we have reduced curing time from 12 to six hours. The elements can be demolded earlier to be delivered to the construction sites much faster. The CO2 footprint has also been reduced significantly,” he adds. This case study is part of the Europe-wide ongoing sustainability campaign “Quantified Sustainable Benefits” launched in 2017. The campaign showcases projects where customers were able to increase their productivity, while at the same time reducing both costs and emissions, thanks to the advanced technology from Master Builders Solutions. It has been awarded with German Award for Online Communications in 2018 for the best microsite and German Brand Award in 2019 for storytelling and content marketing.

“We look forward to another great year of recognizing the creative and innovative uses of Tnemec coatings on water storage tanks,” Moore said. “It’s amazing how the contest has grown during the past decade; it has become a great way to showcase what’s going on in the water tank industry.”

Once the deadline has passed, photographs of all nominated water tanks will be posted on the contest website, available Oct. 7-18, where the general public can vote for the People’s Choice.

The People’s Choice will automatically be considered among 11 other committee-determined runners-up for the official Tank of the Year crown. A committee of water tank enthusiasts will judge these finalists based on artistic value, the significance of the tank to the surrounding community and challenges encountered during the project.

The overall winner of the Tank of the Year contest will be announced Friday, Oct. 25.

Last year’s winning tanks are located in Katy, Texas.

In 2018, the City of Katy completed two water tanks with almost identical eye-catching murals, both colorful depictions of geese flying through a bright blue skyline and the city’s name in oversized red letters.

“The Tank of the Year competition has gained popularity in the industry since its inception in 2006,” Moore said. “Since then, the competition has grown each year to include more municipalities, engineers and applicators than we ever imagined.”

“PPG Aquacron 270 sanding primer combines exceptional performance with faster drying times,” said Michael Kowalski, PPG TRUEFINISH light industrial coatings coordinator. “This new primer dries to the touch in 10 to 20 minutes and can be recoated or finished with a topcoat within one to two hours. The product also allows manufacturers to accelerate their production processes because they can use ordinary tap water to thin or reduce the viscosity of the primer.” 
 
PPG Aquacron 270 sanding primer is engineered for application with PPG Aquacron 200, 201, 380 and 870 series topcoats. It is ideal for interior building and decorative products, such as doors, windows and trim, shutters, cabinetry, furniture, signage and displays.

The solutions presented include the new MasterEase range of plasticizers: based on an innovative molecule structure, MasterEase products deliver concretes of low viscosity and improved workability. The new technology facilitates the optimization of concrete mix-designs, making the installation process more time-efficient and producing concrete surfaces of exceptionally high quality. Notably, the mixing, pumping, installation and troweling of mixes with high proportions of supplementary cementitious materials and/or difficult aggregates become much more straightforward.

MasterEase was used for the recently finished high-rise building “Marienturm” in Frankfurt, Germany.

“It enabled us to reduce the viscosity of the concrete – its stickiness – and to improve its workability,” said Sebastian Dittmar, head of Application Technology Germany at the Construction Chemicals unit of Master Builders Solutions. “So, we could easily pump the concrete up to the required height.”

“We are highly satisfied with the result. MasterEase is the ideal plasticizer for extreme pumping heights, as in the case of the Marienturm: The admixture reduces viscosity by up to 30 percent and provides a precise early strength that remains available even during extended work cycles,” added Andreas Arbeiter, managing director of ready-mix producer Sehring Beton.  

The reduction in viscosity also facilitates surface troweling – an added benefit for ready-mix producers, but likewise in precast production or the casting of concrete slabs. In this way, MasterEase saves time and costs in each construction project, increases the utilization of vehicles and machinery, and reduces the wear-and-tear of mixers, pumps and piping.

Another product used for the construction of the Marienturm is Master X-Seed, which will also be in the focus of the ICCC and the RheoCon2. With Master X-Seed, a liquid hardening accelerator, concrete hardens up to 10 times faster than without admixture. Sebastian Dittmar, Head of Application Technology Germany at the Construction Chemicals unit of BASF, considers Master X-Seed one of Master Builders Solutions’ key innovations in recent years: “Its unique effect really sets Master X-Seed apart, and it has become a reliable essential across a wide variety of application areas. Constructing the Marienturm, Master X-Seed enabled us to obtain significantly earlier formwork removal and thus contributed to a faster construction progress.”

Another customer success story enabled by the usage of Master X-Seed is the example of fdu Betonwerke: this German precast manufacturer was able to achieve a 50 percent reduction in concrete hardening time through the use of Master X-Seed*. The high early strength of the concrete enables fdu to reduce the energy-intensive heat treatment of the fresh concrete, reducing production energy costs by up to 15 percent per site.

“The formworks for concrete elements usually have to remain in the heat chamber for 12 hours to harden," said Thomas Beike, managing director fdu Betonwerke. "That is time-, energy- and cost-intensive. With Master X-Seed, we have reduced curing time from 12 to six hours. The elements can be demolded earlier to be delivered to the construction sites much faster. The CO2 footprint has also been reduced significantly,” he adds. This case study is part of the Europe-wide ongoing sustainability campaign “Quantified Sustainable Benefits” launched in 2017. The campaign showcases projects where customers were able to increase their productivity, while at the same time reducing both costs and emissions, thanks to the advanced technology from Master Builders Solutions. It has been awarded with German Award for Online Communications in 2018 for the best microsite and German Brand Award in 2019 for storytelling and content marketing.

All tank styles are eligible and the deadline for nominating projects is Tuesday, Oct. 1. 

“We look forward to another great year of recognizing the creative and innovative uses of Tnemec coatings on water storage tanks,” Moore said. “It’s amazing how the contest has grown during the past decade; it has become a great way to showcase what’s going on in the water tank industry.”

Once the deadline has passed, photographs of all nominated water tanks will be posted on the contest website, available Oct. 7-18, where the general public can vote for the People’s Choice.

The People’s Choice will automatically be considered among 11 other committee-determined runners-up for the official Tank of the Year crown. A committee of water tank enthusiasts will judge these finalists based on artistic value, the significance of the tank to the surrounding community and challenges encountered during the project.

The overall winner of the Tank of the Year contest will be announced Friday, Oct. 25.

Last year’s winning tanks are located in Katy, Texas.

In 2018, the City of Katy completed two water tanks with almost identical eye-catching murals, both colorful depictions of geese flying through a bright blue skyline and the city’s name in oversized red letters.

“To help keep these tanks shining for years to come, an advanced fluoropolymer coating system, featuring Series 700 HydroFlon, was selected to provide the exterior design with unprecedented color and gloss retention,” Moore said. “HydroFlon limits maintenance and extends the service life of water storage tanks, providing one of the most sustainable coating options for tank exteriors.”

During the 2018 competition, 273 tanks were officially nominated for the contest. The public cast a total of more than 30,000 online votes.

“The Tank of the Year competition has gained popularity in the industry since its inception in 2006,” Moore said. “Since then, the competition has grown each year to include more municipalities, engineers and applicators than we ever imagined.”
