Syensqo has achieved validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets for 2030.
By 2030, Syensqo now aims to reduce its scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% compared to its 2021 level1. Syensqo also commits to reduce its scope 3 GHG emissions by 25%2 in the same timeframe.
Ilham Kadri, CEO of Syensqo, stated, "Achieving SBTi validation is a testament to our commitment to Climate, sustainability and innovation. At Syensqo, we are explorers pursuing scientific breakthroughs that contribute to a more sustainable and resilient world. Our validated 2030 targets reflect our dedication to reducing GHG emissions in our operations and value chain. We are proud to lead the way in decarbonization of the industry with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2040."
Syensqo’s 2030 ambition is in line with a 1.5°C trajectory and prepares for Syensqo's objective to achieve carbon neutrality of its scope 1 and 2 by 2040 with reducing emissions by at least 80% compared to 2021 and compensating residual, hard-to-abate emissions with high-integrity credits3.
To advance concretely on its Scope 3 emissions reduction, the company is launching a Climate Pledge targeting a mutual agreement with at least its top 70 suppliers, which account for c.80% of the group’s GHG emissions from raw materials purchased, with the aim of creating more sustainable value chains across its markets.
Titta Rosvall-Puplett, Syensqo’s Chief Sustainability Officer, added: “The Syensqo Climate Pledge is a collaborative effort that emphasizes the importance of partnership and shared responsibility in addressing climate change. By working closely with our suppliers, we aim to create a ripple effect of positive change in the sector, offering lower carbon solutions to our customers and ultimately contributing to a more sustainable world.”
Through the Climate Pledge, Syensqo’s suppliers will commit to play a key partner role in Syensqo’s decarbonization efforts by setting up a roadmap and milestones to reduce the carbon footprint of their products and operations.
"At Syensqo we are committed to embedding raw material carbon footprint and scope 3 impact into procurement process and supplier allocation. We will also be appointing resources to actively support and challenge our suppliers in our joint decarbonization journey. Furthermore, we aim to forge strategic partnerships with suppliers who commit to science-based targets aligned with the 1.5°C trajectory, ensuring sustainability is at the core of procurement at Syensqo", said Juan Carlos Fuenmayor, Chief Procurement Officer at Syensqo.
Syensqo's sustainability policies that advance its One Planet ambitions around sustainable growth, climate and nature, and improving quality of life for people worldwide are published on the Sustainability page of syensqo.com. The 12 policies demonstrate how Syensqo is embedding sustainability into enterprise objectives and meeting stakeholder expectations for responsible business practices.
1Emissions are absolute. The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
2From its Focus 5: purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, processing of sold products, use of sold products and end-of-life treatment of sold products.
3In line with the recommendations of the UN High Level Expert Group on the Net Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Actors.
