These products include a new hybrid epoxy/polysiloxane resin that offers superior, isocyanate-free performance for protective coatingsresistance to corrosion, high temperatures and graffiti with excellent gloss retention and lower yellowing.a high performance. It is an isocyanate-free alternative to traditional aliphatic polyurethane coatings.

The newest member of the EPI-REZ waterborne epoxy family, which is an extremely stable and flexible solid epoxy dispersion. Its.  performance is comparable to solventborne systems at less than 50 g/L of VOC. It provides superior adhesion, faster dry and long pot lifes. Suggested applications include concrete floor/wall coatings, protective coatings for metal substrates, ACE and transportation coatings.

Evonik will roll out a new concept targeting the highly engaged, DIY beauty enthusiasts. This concept contains new “booster” formulas that are concentrates of functional ingredients that allow beauty consumers to enhance their everyday skin care routine by maximizing certain effects with just a few drops.

New products: Additionally, Evonik will be presenting the Sensory Kaleidoscope 2.0, an innovative interactive tool, which helps formulators to achieve desired skin feel. Visitors to the Evonik booth can experience a live, interactive demonstration of the tool on a screen and experience how the formulations feel on the skin.

The Silica Business Line will be launching its new eco-friendly sensory modifier for leave-on applications, SIPERNAT 11 PC. In addition, the business will showcase SIPERNAT 22 PC and SIPERNAT 2200 PC, which are natural replacements for polyethylene beads in rinse-off applications. Evonik’s AEROSIL R816 will be featured for use in Pickering Emulsions or as a co-emulsifier in skin care, hair care, or sunscreen products.

Among strategies being employed are new direct investments, expanded service and laboratory networks and new formulations with enhanced performance characteristics.

This is the first part of a two-part story on strategies in the paint and coatings market in Brazil. A second part will be published in December, focusing on systems management, services and quality control.

Many of the paint makers and suppliers in the market gathered at the 2017 Abrafati trade show in Sao Paulo during early October.

Building on Investments

Among companies continuing new investments in Brazil is BASF, which is now producing some acrylics that are not manufactured anywhere else in Latin America, according to Valter Milani, the director of petrochemical sales for the company in Sao Paulo. In June 2016, BASF began operations of the first 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) plant in South America, in Guaratinguetá, Sao Paulo state.

BASF’s local manufacturing at other plants like the €500 million Camaçari Acrylic Complex helps reduce costs for its paint lines, like Suvinil, which launched a new product in September, Suvinil Limpeza Total, a washable acrylic-based paint. The company is also now helping paint formulators substitute imported ingredients with downstream customization, noted Milani.

CMC Milling do Brasil also has increased its production lines recently, boosting capacity by 40 percent to 200 metric tons per year, noted Jose Ricardo Giacobelli, the managing director of the company, in Campina Grande do Sul, Paraná state. The new capacity will help smaller paint formulators develop test products, he says.

And Chromaflo Technologies has made new investment in its Rio Claro, Sao Paulo, production facility, noted Luis Silva, a commercial director for the company in Barueri, Sao Paulo.

Rebuilding Logistics and Distribution

The reorganization of the distribution lines and logistics for ingredients and final product lines was also a common strategy identified at Abrafati. Angus Chemical, for example, has selected Univar to provide distribution services for its products in Brazil and the region, said Mauricio Nisiyama, the Latin America marketing manager for the company, in Sao Paulo. The new partnership will help Angus with new product formulations that may be targeted to price-sensitive customers, he noted.

Tailoring New Products

The offer of new products to the Brazilian market during its recovery is a basic strategy many companies are pursuing. Since the so-called standard quality of architectural paints and coatings has emerged as the fastest growing segment class, in place of premium products that grew fastest up to a few years ago, more companies are increasing the level of technologies employed in formulations.

Future demand for paints and coatings products in Brazil will be based largely on the environmental friendliness of the product and on its sustainable production, suggests Thiago Guimaraes, the business manager for Latin America at Hexio, in Sao Paulo. While these considerations are now a new trend in the country, they soon will become regulated requirements, he reckons. His company will be bringing more waterborne epoxy products to Brazil over the coming year, he said.

Chromaflo always introduces a new product each year and the latest trend in automotive refinish is highlighted, Silva said. Abrafati has predicted that the automotive refinish market will grow between 5 and 10 percent this year, unlike all other paint and coatings segments, predicted to grow no faster than 2 percent.

We have them to thank for energy-efficient refrigerators, comfortable upholstered furniture, safe car seats, protective coatings and lightweight composites. Eighty years ago, Dr. Otto Bayer discovered polyurethane chemistry virtually by accident. His perseverance and creativity launched the sweeping success of one of the world’s most versatile plastics – and the success story is far from over. 

“With curiosity and courage Covestro is advancing the development of polyurethanes to make the world a brighter place,” said Daniel Meyer, Global Head of the Polyurethanes segment. “We don’t leave anything to chance but are specifically pushing existing boundaries to make more efficient insulating materials, even lighter materials, and even more resource-saving products possible.”

All new developments must meet Covestro’s sustainability targets.

“We take a comprehensive approach to the entire product life cycle, including social, ecological and economic aspects,” said Meyer. “Our products are manufactured on the basis of carbon. Our goal is to draw the maximum benefit from the carbon we use.” 

Even more efficient refrigerators
Polyurethanes make an important contribution to securing global food supplies: Some 95 percent of the world’s refrigerators are thermally insulated with rigid polyurethane foam – and the Baytherm Microcell polyurethane system can raise their insulating performance by another ten percent. That means greater energy and cost savings in households and reduced CO2 emissions. A leading appliance manufacturer is already using this system in its production. 

Carbon dioxide as a raw material
Covestro has developed a method for using the greenhouse gas CO2 to synthesize polyurethane components. It markets these raw materials, known as polyols, under the brand name cardyon for the production of flexible polyurethane foam, and operates a new production plant for them at its Dormagen site. Up to 20 percent of the fossil raw materials previously used in these products have been replaced by carbon dioxide. A special catalyst gives the molecule the required level of reactivity. 

New model for affordable housing
Providing fast, affordable and sustainable housing is a global challenge. Covestro is breaking new ground in its search for creative solutions. Together with industry partners, governments, government agencies and society, Covestro is developing models for affordable housing and running specific projects locally. One example is a multipurpose building in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, that was planned and built by the local council, the French prefabricated building manufacturer Logelis and Covestro.

Next-generation rotor blades
In keeping with its sustainability strategy, Covestro develops materials and technologies for generating renewable energy – with a focus on wind power. The company has developed an innovative technology for manufacturing rotor blades for wind turbines. The rotors are fabricated in a special process from a polyurethane resin and a fiberglass fabric. For the resin Covestro recently received the vital DNV GL certification for China and can now supply its products to rotor blade manufacturers there. 

Proud past, exciting future
Dr. Bayer could only have dreamed of such developments. But even 80 years ago, he lived out Covestro’s corporate values: curious, courageous, colorful. He stubbornly pursued his goal of enhancing the efficiency of plastics manufacturing and en route discovered polyurethane chemistry, which became his passion. He even stuck to his guns when his superiors shook their heads at the bubbly mass he produced in his experiments, saying it was at most a “substitute for Swiss cheese”. Far from it! With incredible creativity he and his team discovered a whole string of potential applications.

The two UVAs can both be used in combination with a hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) such as SONGSORB CS AQ01, which was introduced at this year’s European Coatings Show.

“The new UVAs provide coatings with outstanding protection against degradation due to high temperatures during processing and environmental impact during use. They therefore help to prolong the life of end products such as vehicles,” said Rosanna Telesca, Leader, Market Center Coatings at SONGWON.

SONGSORB CS 400 is a liquid hydroxyphenyl triazine (HPT) UV absorber with very high thermal stability and outstanding resistance in coatings exposed to high bake cycles and/or extreme external conditions. With its hydroxy functionality, SONGSORB CS 400 minimizes migration and provides coatings with high photostability for long-term performance. The molecule is designed to ensure high performance and durability in water- and solvent-borne as well as 100 percent solids automotive and industrial finishes. Its color and stability make SONGSORB CS 400 the UVA of choice for all coatings that require low color. It is suitable for use in amine and/or metal catalyzed coatings and coatings applied on basecoats or substrates containing such catalysts because it does not interfere with them.

SONGWON is also complementing its existing liquid benzotriazole range of UVAs. SONGSORB CS 384-2 is designed for high performance coatings that meet the durability requirements of automotive coatings and provide top quality finishes. It protects base coats as well as both wood and plastic substrates very efficiently against ultraviolet radiation. Outstanding thermal stability and resistance to environmental impacts make it an excellent choice for coatings exposed to high bake cycles and/or extreme weather conditions. With its liquid form, SONGSORB CS 384-2 is suitable for incorporation in waterborne and in most common solvent systems.

Both SONGSORB CS 400 and SONGSORB CS 384-2 can be used in combination with a HALS such as SONGSORB CS 292 or SONGSORB CS AQ01 to obtain synergistic effects that protect coatings still better against gloss reduction, cracking, blistering, delamination and color change.

Evonik’s AEROSIL R816 will be featured for use in Pickering Emulsions or as a co-emulsifier in skin care, hair care, or sunscreen products.

Among strategies being employed are new direct investments, expanded service and laboratory networks and new formulations with enhanced performance characteristics.

This is the first part of a two-part story on strategies in the paint and coatings market in Brazil. A second part will be published in December, focusing on systems management, services and quality control.

Many of the paint makers and suppliers in the market gathered at the 2017 Abrafati trade show in Sao Paulo during early October.

Building on Investments

Among companies continuing new investments in Brazil is BASF, which is now producing some acrylics that are not manufactured anywhere else in Latin America, according to Valter Milani, the director of petrochemical sales for the company in Sao Paulo. In June 2016, BASF began operations of the first 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) plant in South America, in Guaratinguetá, Sao Paulo state.

BASF’s local manufacturing at other plants like the €500 million Camaçari Acrylic Complex helps reduce costs for its paint lines, like Suvinil, which launched a new product in September, Suvinil Limpeza Total, a washable acrylic-based paint. The company is also now helping paint formulators substitute imported ingredients with downstream customization, noted Milani.

CMC Milling do Brasil also has increased its production lines recently, boosting capacity by 40 percent to 200 metric tons per year, noted Jose Ricardo Giacobelli, the managing director of the company, in Campina Grande do Sul, Paraná state. The new capacity will help smaller paint formulators develop test products, he says.

And Chromaflo Technologies has made new investment in its Rio Claro, Sao Paulo, production facility, noted Luis Silva, a commercial director for the company in Barueri, Sao Paulo.

Rebuilding Logistics and Distribution

The reorganization of the distribution lines and logistics for ingredients and final product lines was also a common strategy identified at Abrafati. Angus Chemical, for example, has selected Univar to provide distribution services for its products in Brazil and the region, said Mauricio Nisiyama, the Latin America marketing manager for the company, in Sao Paulo. The new partnership will help Angus with new product formulations that may be targeted to price-sensitive customers, he noted.

Tailoring New Products

The offer of new products to the Brazilian market during its recovery is a basic strategy many companies are pursuing. Since the so-called standard quality of architectural paints and coatings has emerged as the fastest growing segment class, in place of premium products that grew fastest up to a few years ago, more companies are increasing the level of technologies employed in formulations.

Future demand for paints and coatings products in Brazil will be based largely on the environmental friendliness of the product and on its sustainable production, suggests Thiago Guimaraes, the business manager for Latin America at Hexio, in Sao Paulo. While these considerations are now a new trend in the country, they soon will become regulated requirements, he reckons. His company will be bringing more waterborne epoxy products to Brazil over the coming year, he said.

Chromaflo always introduces a new product each year and the latest trend in automotive refinish is highlighted, Silva said. Abrafati has predicted that the automotive refinish market will grow between 5 and 10 percent this year, unlike all other paint and coatings segments, predicted to grow no faster than 2 percent.

Eighty years ago, Dr. Otto Bayer discovered polyurethane chemistry virtually by accident. His perseverance and creativity launched the sweeping success of one of the world’s most versatile plastics – and the success story is far from over.

Even more efficient refrigerators
Polyurethanes make an important contribution to securing global food supplies: Some 95 percent of the world’s refrigerators are thermally insulated with rigid polyurethane foam – and the Baytherm Microcell polyurethane system can raise their insulating performance by another ten percent. That means greater energy and cost savings in households and reduced CO2 emissions. A leading appliance manufacturer is already using this system in its production. 

Carbon dioxide as a raw material
Covestro has developed a method for using the greenhouse gas CO2 to synthesize polyurethane components. It markets these raw materials, known as polyols, under the brand name cardyon for the production of flexible polyurethane foam, and operates a new production plant for them at its Dormagen site. Up to 20 percent of the fossil raw materials previously used in these products have been replaced by carbon dioxide. A special catalyst gives the molecule the required level of reactivity. 

New model for affordable housing
Providing fast, affordable and sustainable housing is a global challenge. Covestro is breaking new ground in its search for creative solutions. Together with industry partners, governments, government agencies and society, Covestro is developing models for affordable housing and running specific projects locally. One example is a multipurpose building in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, that was planned and built by the local council, the French prefabricated building manufacturer Logelis and Covestro.

Next-generation rotor blades
In keeping with its sustainability strategy, Covestro develops materials and technologies for generating renewable energy – with a focus on wind power. The company has developed an innovative technology for manufacturing rotor blades for wind turbines. The rotors are fabricated in a special process from a polyurethane resin and a fiberglass fabric. For the resin Covestro recently received the vital DNV GL certification for China and can now supply its products to rotor blade manufacturers there. 

Proud past, exciting future
Dr. Bayer could only have dreamed of such developments. But even 80 years ago, he lived out Covestro’s corporate values: curious, courageous, colorful. He stubbornly pursued his goal of enhancing the efficiency of plastics manufacturing and en route discovered polyurethane chemistry, which became his passion. He even stuck to his guns when his superiors shook their heads at the bubbly mass he produced in his experiments, saying it was at most a “substitute for Swiss cheese”. Far from it! With incredible creativity he and his team discovered a whole string of potential applications.

The two UVAs can both be used in combination with a hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) such as SONGSORB CS AQ01, which was introduced at this year’s European Coatings Show.

“The new UVAs provide coatings with outstanding protection against degradation due to high temperatures during processing and environmental impact during use. They therefore help to prolong the life of end products such as vehicles,” said Rosanna Telesca, Leader, Market Center Coatings at SONGWON.

SONGSORB CS 400 is a liquid hydroxyphenyl triazine (HPT) UV absorber with very high thermal stability and outstanding resistance in coatings exposed to high bake cycles and/or extreme external conditions. With its hydroxy functionality, SONGSORB CS 400 minimizes migration and provides coatings with high photostability for long-term performance. The molecule is designed to ensure high performance and durability in water- and solvent-borne as well as 100 percent solids automotive and industrial finishes. Its color and stability make SONGSORB CS 400 the UVA of choice for all coatings that require low color. It is suitable for use in amine and/or metal catalyzed coatings and coatings applied on basecoats or substrates containing such catalysts because it does not interfere with them.

SONGWON is also complementing its existing liquid benzotriazole range of UVAs. SONGSORB CS 384-2 is designed for high performance coatings that meet the durability requirements of automotive coatings and provide top quality finishes. It protects base coats as well as both wood and plastic substrates very efficiently against ultraviolet radiation. Outstanding thermal stability and resistance to environmental impacts make it an excellent choice for coatings exposed to high bake cycles and/or extreme weather conditions. With its liquid form, SONGSORB CS 384-2 is suitable for incorporation in waterborne and in most common solvent systems.

Both SONGSORB CS 400 and SONGSORB CS 384-2 can be used in combination with a HALS such as SONGSORB CS 292 or SONGSORB CS AQ01 to obtain synergistic effects that protect coatings still better against gloss reduction, cracking, blistering, delamination and color change.
