Using existing colors – including those from the 2018 Color Trends palette – Behr put together a new color palette, inspired by the Scottish tradition of Còsagach (pronounced “kosgough”).
“We may only be a few weeks into the new year, but Còsagach is already the hottest lifestyle trend of 2018,” said Erika Woelfel, vice president of Color and Creative Services at Behr. “Much like the Danes’ hygge, Còsagach is all about creating warmth and coziness at home—something we’re all in search of this winter.”
According to Woelfel, Còsagach is intended to connect homeowners, who crave personal, meaningful spaces, to their homes and surroundings.
“It evokes feelings of snug, sheltered coziness, and taking cues from this Scottish approach can help people create enjoyable, enveloping spaces for homeowners to return to each night to rejuvenate their spirit,” she said.
“At Behr, we encourage people to practice mindfulness at home by being attentive to curation and the intentional use of color to enhance the energy of a space,” Woelfel added. “Each of these Còsagach-inspired colors is handpicked from our core color collection and can help do-it-yourselfers turn their spaces into personal, cozy sanctuaries.”
Woelfel said that while the conversation about Còsagach “may be fleeting” – “Home décor and lifestyle trends tend to come and go rather quickly as consumer and tastemaker preferences change,” she noted – Behr predicts the theme “of personalization and mindfulness at home” will stick around long after wintertime and gain traction throughout 2018.
The color expert offered tips for people looking to achieve the look in their homes. She suggests trying earthy greens or browns on the walls, paired with a patterned wool blanket and warm fireplace, “to evoke a sense of snug sanctuary and relaxation.”

Here are the hues she recommends:
- “No need to leave the couch this winter,” Woelfel said. “Scotland Road 450F-4, a restorative spruce hue, epitomizes a cozy escape and will remind you of the country’s lush green landscape. For a darker, cocooning shade, try Equilibrium T18-20;
- “Whiskey Barrel N230-6, a warm brown, is the perfect complement to a crackling fireplace,” she said. “Named for Scotland’s national drink, this hue will help you transition inside after a day full of outdoor adventure;”
- “If you’re looking for your new favorite neutral, a taupe gray likeOff The Grid T18-08 oozes comfort and simplicity,” she added. “For a bolder pick, try Unplugged T18-11 on a statement wall or in a reading nook.”
