Axalta re-signed its Official Team Supplier contract with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team at the beginning of 2020.
The team is the reigning FIA Formula One Constructors’ Champion, having clinched a world record sixth consecutive title at the end of the 2019 season and it has relied on the customized support and tailored product offerings from Spies Hecker, a global refinish brand of Axalta, for more than six years.
Axalta works closely with the Team’s Paint Shop in Brackley, UK, to ensure that the paintwork on the cars is light, durable and can withstand the extreme track conditions, while also looking stunning.
The 2020 livery, which was unveiled in London in February, and which according to the FIA, may well be on track, racing, at some point this season, has one noticeable difference: the addition of burgundy.
This injection of a new color is thanks to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team’s new Principal Partner, INEOS, as burgundy is the color of its sports division, which includes its Tour de France and America’s Cup teams.
"The burgundy isn’t quite as straightforward as it may look. There is also a five-color fade from the burgundy into black and a very fine black key line and a silver key line that outlines the burgundy areas," said Andrew Moody, head of Paint and Graphics at Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. "Plus, the INEOS name is painted in white, so the process is fairly complex, but we know we can rely on Spies Hecker."
