    CHINACOAT2013 Preview

From November 20-22 the Shanghai New International Expo Center will host CHINACOAT2013, the main attraction for raw material and equipment suppliers looking to benefit from China’s growing paint and coatings industry.

    Kerry Pianoforte, Editor 10.24.13
China is now the world’s largest producer and consumer of coatings. According to CHINACOAT’s organizers, Sinostar International Ltd., from January to November 2012, China’s coatings output reached 11.4 million tons, with a year-on-year increase of 12.09 percent. This is expected to grow by 10 to 15 percent annually. Since, 1996 CHINACOAT has provided attendees with a platform for industry professionals to engage, interact and discover opportunities for future growth.

CHINACOAT2013 will take place November 20-22 in the Shanghai New International Expo Center in Halls E2, E3, E4, E5 and E6. This annual event offers attendees the opportunity to learn about the latest products and technologies, as well as a chance to network face-to-face with key industry players.

As this issue went to press, a total of 920 exhibitors from 33 countries/regions were booked to showcase their products and services in an exhibit area of 60,000 square meters. There were a total of 186 new exhibitors this year, 52 were from overseas, 11 from the Hong Kong/Taiwan regions and 123 from inside China. The largest exhibiting group is from China, with 649 Chinese suppliers signed up to provide international visitors with a convenient way to source Chinese products in one place. CHINACOAT2013 also offers visitors the opportunity purchase a wide range of products and services that are available from a variety of international companies.
There are six exhibit zones featuring international and China raw materials, machinery and instrumentation; powder coatings technology and UV/EB products and services.

    CHINACOAT Conference
The 11th CHINACOAT Conference will be held two days prior to the opening of the exhibition November 18-19 at the Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel.  The theme of this year’s conference is Nano and Bio Technology in Coatings and Finishing.
Nanotechnology is highly multidisciplinary, drawing from fields such as colloidal science, device physics and supra-molecular chemistry. Typically, they are five to 10 times more efficient than their traditional counterparts and attracting worldwide R&D work in both public and private sectors. However, the prevailing concept “if it is nano-it must be efficient” is debatable. Biotechnology provides tools for adopting and modifying biological organisms, products, processes and systems found in nature to develop processes and products which are eco-efficient and profitable. It is providing a range of tools for the industry towards improving cost whilst contributing to the concept of sustainable products.

The aim of this Conference is to critically assess the available technology, stimulate new ideas, linking academia and industry in a most thought-provoking and productive form.

Presentation of papers and post-presentation discussions will be conducted in both English and Chinese (Putonghua).
The first keynote will be delivered by Prof. Jamil Baghdachi of the Coatings Research Institute, Eastern Michigan University, U.S. on Monday, November 18th at 1:45 PM. Prof. Baghadachi will present “NanoTechnology in Coatings: Realizing the Potential.”
According to Prof. Baghadachi, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology have fueled vigorous research and development in material science, which is being applied to develop coatings with novel properties. The approach has enabled molecular level control of composition and nanometer scale property control that have resulted in rapid developments in raw materials and coatings with improved decorative and protective properties as well as enhanced adhesion, superior aesthetics, and improved corrosion resistance. This keynote paper focuses on the development and application of organic and inorganic nanomaterials in coatings, examples of coatings and their properties.

The objective of this tutorial is to review and discuss the most recent advances in producing coatings from sustainable materials at competitive costs and properties. All aspects of the raw materials, coatings, formulation, challenges, paths to problem resolution will be discussed. Such products can be a direct replacement for expensive and petroleum-based raw materials and coatings. In addition, examples of sustainable raw materials and coatings as well as their application in architectural, general industrial, automotive/aerospace application will be presented.

    New Tech Corner
This two-day event will feature informal presentations on case studies, novel technology, insights and marketing strategies, providing an ideal interactive platform for both speakers and visitors to share their experiences and expertise together.
    Themes of this year include:
    • New UV Additives
    • Intermediates
    • Multiscale Modeling Approach
    • Waterborne Technology
    • Polyurethane Coatings
    •Tackifiers.

CHINACOAT’s New Tech Corner will be held in Hall A1, Meeting Zone A1.001. There are no admission fees and all visitors are welcome to attend.
Theme 1: New UV Additives, Yuliang Cai, technical service manager at BYK Solution (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will present “New UV Crosslinkable Surface Additives. This presentation is for the practical application of UV systems and addresses some problems:  leveling, wetting, defoaming, anti-stain, scratch resistance and provides  some solutions. This presentation includes the following aspects:  an overview of radiation curing system, surface additives in UV system and the application of the new UV cross-linkable surface additive, defoamers application in the UV system and wax application in UV systems.
Theme 2: Intermediates will be presented by Paul Kelley, market development – radcure applications specialist at Perstorp Group. His talk is “Intermediates for the Design and Control of Hard and Soft UV Curing Plastic Coatings.” Coatings for plastic applications tend to be functional, whether it is hard “scratch proof” coatings, optical coatings with specific refractive index, or soft feel coatings which give a tactile aspect and add to a feeling of quality. There is a trend towards UV curing coatings with carefully controlled physical characteristics for end use requirement. Development of oligomers based on customized polyol intermediates and leading to control of properties such as Tg, modulus, impact strength, hardness and resistance can be achieved by design.
Theme 3: Multiscale Modeling Approach will be discussed by Jie Xiao, deputy head of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Soochow University, China. His talk, “Multiscale Modeling for Predictive Design of Nanopaint-based Functional Coatings,” will present on the development of a high performance computing-based computational platform that can support the design of functional nanocoatings for the automotive and aircraft industries. This platform allows the prediction of macroscopic coating performance under the realistic processing and service environment from the fundamental molecular behavior by integrating different methods and theories at individual scales. A computer-aided design tool is being constructed to facilitate engineers in materials innovation, processing techniques optimization, and knowledge discovery.

Theme 4: Waterborne Technology will be addressed by Hua Zhou, R&D engineer at Arkema Coating Resins and his presentation, “Novel Waterborne Technology for Metal Protection.”

Metals and their alloys are excellent materials with high strength and outstanding mechanical properties. However, when exposed to a corrosive environment, the surface of a steel structure will corrode and thus pose a potential danger to the whole steel structure and reduce its service life. The huge economic impact of the corrosion of metallic structures is a very important issue for all modern societies.

Today, corrosion protection of metal usually employs multi-layer systems involving at least a primer and a top coat. These two coats are often based on different technologies implying solvent-borne and water-borne binders and formulations. It introduces complexity in applications, drying equipment and processes.

There is a new waterborne acrylic technology that provides by itself high protection against corrosion and good adhesion to a wide variety of substrates, even under harsh conditions. Due to these key features, this waterborne technology offers many performance advantages when used as the single Direct-to-Metal (DTM) coating.

This presentation will highlight the performance properties of the waterborne DTM technology, as well as the mechanisms and fundamentals which have been used in the resin development.

Theme 5: Polyurethane Coatings will feature a presentation, “Innovative PU Solutions for Coatings,” given by Frank Zhang, segment head for application development APAC, Bayer MaterialScience. Polyurethane coatings had been widely used in varies applications. With the increasing requirements on Environment, Efficiency & higher performance, the new requirements to conventional solventborne polyurethane coatings had been raised as well. In this session, we will discuss how waterborne PU or WB UV to achieve high performance as well as environment friendly & efficiency at the same time. This is also the trends for coatings in the future.

Theme 6: Tackifiers will offer a presentation from Won Suk Kong of Kolon Industries. His presentation is” Synthesis and Characterization of Hydrogenated Sorbic Acid Grafted Dicyclopentadiene Tackifier.”
Typically, hydrocarbon resins are non-polar, and thus highly compatible with non-polar rubbers and polymer. However, they are poorly compatible with polar system, such as acrylic copolymer, polyurethanes and polyamides. Moreover, recently the raw materials of tackifier from naphtha cracking had been decreased because of light feed cracking such as gas cracking. To overcome this problem, novel hydrocarbon resins were designed to have a highly polar chemical structure. And, it was synthesized by Diels-Alder reaction of dicyclopentadiene monomer and sorbic acid from blueberry as renewable resources. Acrylic resins were formulated with various tackifiers solution including hydrogenated sorbic acid grafted dicyclopentadiene tackifier in acrylic adhesive and rolling ball tack, loop tack, 180° peel adhesion strength, and shear adhesion strength were measured. And Rheometer, DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and XRD (X-ray diffraction), the properties depend on the softening point and polar content of tackifiers.
