Dow Coating Materials, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, introduced new ROVACE 10 Vinyl Acrylic Binder today at the Western Coatings Symposium. Developed with both the formulator and contractor in mind, this new low-volatile organic compound (VOC) technology for flat to semi-gloss interior paints offers excellent manufacturing capabilities.
“Developing technologies with high-quality performance properties can pose unique challenges when working to meet the complex needs of both formulators and contractors,” said Fallyn Flaherty-Earp, North America architectural marketing manager, Dow Coating Materials. “While both are looking for quality solutions, the specifications and processes surrounding each formulator, customer and product are completely different and on occasion at odds with each other. Through constant collaboration, we’re always trying to create new technologies that help meet these competing demands.”
For formulators, the flexibility of ROVACE 10 Emulsion helps reduce the number of considerations factored into a paint formulation to help meet different quality points across paint lines. For example, ROVACE 10 Emulsion may be added during the grind stage without any adverse effects on property performance.
“While some binders’ rigidity are suited best for one type of paint, the manufacturing flexibility of ROVACE 10 Emulsion allows formulators the option to combine this technology into a broad range of paints with varied pigment volume concentrations (PVC), including: premium and mid-tone flat paints for new construction, quality satin finish formulations and semi-gloss blends,” said Linda Adamson, technical service manager, Dow Coating Materials.
The flexibility of ROVACE 10 Emulsion also offers excellent processing capabilities for easy pumping and handling.
For paint contractors, ROVACE 10 Emulsion offers good spray application and touch-up in starting point formulations. Demonstrating exceptional color acceptance, ROVACE 10 Emulsion also helps paint retailers and applicators match color chips and maintain uniform color appearance under various conditions of paint age and shear stability.
“It’s not only about the aesthetics,” said Flaherty-Earp. “ROVACE 10 Emulsion has been created as a low-VOC product that can be formulated to pass numerous Master Painters Institution (MPI) specifications.”
At 55 percent solids, Dow Coating Materials adds ROVACE 10 Emulsion to its growing list of low-VOC offerings. This new technology is APEO-free1 and solvent-free2 capable to meet the growing demands of consumers and retailers. In formulated paints, ROVACE™ 10 Emulsion has also undergone testing to show it can be formulated to meet MPI specifications #44, #53, and #143.
For enhanced performance while maintaining low-VOC, ROVACE 10 Emulsion may be used with ACRYSOL RM-725 Rheology Modifier, an easy-pouring associative thickener that provides better applied hiding, enhanced surface appearance and better touch-up. This APEO-free1, solvent-free2 HEUR offers excellent sag-flow balance when combined with ROVACE 10 Emulsion.
Formulating for the contractor and how additives can make a difference will be discussed by Tara Conley, technical sales manager, Dow Coating Materials at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, October 28 during a technical presentation at the Western Coatings Symposium.
