PPG recently completed a COLORFUL COMMUNITIES project in Piraeus in the Attica region of Greece that helped revitalize the Chatzikiriakeio Child Care Institution.
The Colorful Communities program provides PPG volunteers and products along with financial contributions to bring color and vitality to communities where the company operates around the world, such as in nearby Athens, where PPG has automotive refinish, protective and marine coatings and architectural coatings facilities.
The project brought together more than 30 PPG volunteers, who spent nine days revitalizing an old railroad car on the institution’s grounds. PPG provided more than $2,600 (€2,200 EUR) to assist with the project, including around 150 liters (40 gallons) of SELEMIX paint products by PPG.
Founded by royal decree in 1889, the Chatzikiriakeio Child Care Institution provides comprehensive care and support to girls ages six and up whose families are facing social and economic challenges. In addition to housing, the facility’s 80 residents receive health care, education, counseling, emotional support from social workers and psychologists, and financial support for higher education and other needs.
Volunteers painted the exterior of the railroad car in the full-color palette of the Colorful Communities logo, which includes yellow, green, blue and red. These colors were chosen to create a cheerful, welcoming and bright outdoor play space for the girls.
“Chatzikiriakeio Child Care Institution is a genuine example of not only Greece’s cultural heritage but also altruism and humanity, as most of its personnel are volunteers,” said Nikos Georgiou, PPG market director, Greece and Turkey. “PPG is proud to help beautify the grounds of this significant nationwide organization, and our employees will continue to support it through PPG’s regional Charity Partner program.”
