    [body] => Industrial designer Michael Young used BASF's refinish paint brand R-M on the Acura CDX compact SUV.

Launched in Asia for the first time, the R-M THE CODE project unveiled the new Acura CDX at BASF-TGPM Automotive Refinish Competence Center (RCC) in Foshan, Guangdong Province.

In 2018, R-M invited a variety of international, prestigious designers from Europe to initiate the R-M THE CODE project, to showcase their visions for the future of mobility.

A total of 10 designers from 10 countries worked on various forms of transportation over one year on individual projects, including an Aston Martin, a driverless battery-electric bus, an electric scooter and a boat.

R-M supported the designers with its color database and refinishing competence as well as its experts from its color laboratories.

THE CODE stands for a special color code for each designer and each project.

The Acura boasts the newly designed color, “New English White” which was created by Young for the car-sharing concept, especially for urban consumers in China.

"This is the first time I have ever designed a color for a car," Young said. "The inspiration stems from a historic color called Old English White, which has been used a lot on classic sports cars. When I discovered the qualities of the R-M paints, I decided to modernize the color and created ‘New English White,’ a fairly neutral and generalized color easily related to everyone. It has a sense of history while bringing the 21st century into a new decade.”

Chemovator GmbH, the internal incubator of BASF, turns unconventional ideas which carry usually high risks and lie outside the core business of BASF into investable business models. 
 
The company was founded in May 2018. 
 
“A lot has happened,” said Dr. Markus Bold, head of Chemovator GmbH. 
 
Seven teams already moved into Chemovator. There is space for up to 12 teams in total. 
 
"In the last year, we saw more than 50 idea pitches from BASF employees. I am thrilled about the variety of ideas and I have a lot of respect for each and every BASF employee who takes the courage to present a business idea on our stage," Bold said.
 
Chemovator puts great emphasis on the external exchange of competencies and knowledge with experience founders and business angels. In addition, the teams can focus 100 percent on their business idea. This enables Chemovator to combine the best of both worlds: corporates and startups.
 
The next step is to bring the first wave of portfolio ventures to fruition. Furthermore, Chemovator will contribute to turn the Rhine-Neckar region to the preferred hub for startups around chemistry. 
 
“Our goal is to become the go-to-place for incubating ideas for the chemical industry,” Bold said. “To do so, we want to strongly collaborate and foster an extensive exchange with local innovation hubs and cooperators.”

BASF’s plastic additives package is helping to protect the roof at Incheon Airport’s Terminal 2, with thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) sheets produced by Wonpoong Corporation in South Korea under the brand name SuperGuard. TPO sheets are widely used as roofing membranes in commercial buildings and other structures as a more environmentally friendly alternative for high-performance waterproofing.
 
The additives package, comprising a light stabilizer from the Tinuvin range and an antioxidant from the Irgastab range, helps protect the TPO membranes, hence the roofs, from wear and tear resulting from extreme heat and light exposure.
 
“TPO roofing membranes produced with BASF’s polymer formulation and stabilization can perform in some of the most extreme climate conditions and meet current roofing and waterproofing standards,” said Hermann Althoff, SVP of BASF’s Performance Chemicals unit in Asia Pacific. “Our stabilizers reduce production costs and make products last longer, and thereby help to conserve precious raw material.”
 
The light stabilizer is based on BASF’s proprietary NOR-HALS (hindered amine light stabilizer) technology. Due to the inherent advantages of NOR-HALS technology, the stabilizers have a lower interaction with system components and acidic environmental contaminants than traditional HALS products, thereby helping to retain the mechanical properties of TPO membranes to meet the demands of building owners.
 
Heat and UV exposure are two of the most detrimental factors affecting the useful life of roofing membranes today. Manufacturers need to fulfill the new ASTM D6878 standard for TPO roofing formulations. These standards identify the minimum levels of exposure to heat and UV levels that a TPO membrane must be able to withstand. By using BASF’s plastic additives technology, Wonpoong succeeded in winning the contract over other companies by receiving a better evaluation for weatherproofing.
 
“We tried solutions from other suppliers but got the best results with BASF’s technology,” said John Yu, director of R&D at Wonpoong Corporation. “Now we are able to ensure the polymer’s UV resistance and provide our customers with more durable products.”
 
Energy issues are growing in importance in the selection of all building materials, and roofing is no exception. Factoring in overall energy performance as part of a system’s life-cycle cost, many customers and contractors are insisting on TPO roofing membranes as they are heat-reflective. Energy efficient roofing systems can reduce a building’s internal cooling costs dramatically.

BASF implemented process improvements to provide a reliable and stable supply of its attapulgite offerings. The enhancements at their site in Quincy, Fla. include expanding of milling and product packaging capabilities for coarse gel, fine gel and granular materials, as well as improved logistics in shipping the mineral globally. 
 
For the past few years, meeting the increasing demand for attapulgite has been challenging, especially in emerging economies where construction and infrastructure development has been on the rise.
 
“We have introduced several improvements to site operations, including investments in new packaging equipment, as well as upgrading throughput in our mills. These actions will strengthen our ability to provide a reliable supply of high-quality attapulgite-based materials to support the business growth of our customers globally,” said Dr. Claus Dallner, VP, Global Business Management for Additives, BASF.
 
BASF has also improved its warehouse management system to allow for ample safety stock to offset seasonal demand spikes. 
 
Attapulgite is a naturally mined needle-like clay mineral composed of magnesium-aluminum silicate. The mineral takes its name from the town of Attapulgus, Ga., where the US supply of the mineral is found. BASF operates its attapulgite mines in this area with the manufacturing facility located approximately 17 miles south of Attapulgus in Quincy, Fla. BASF owns the majority of the 18,000 acres in Florida and Georgia supplying the plant with the product.  
 
“Our attapulgite products can help our customers reduce formulation complexity and improve efficiency. It offers very good colloidal properties, such as specific features in dispersion, high-temperature endurance, salt and alkali resistance, as well as high adsorbing and de-coloring capabilities,” said Michelle Tadlock, product manager of Attapulgite, BASF.

In 2018, we carried out an eco-efficiency analysis of adhesive labels for durable goods: It found that, in comparison to solvent-based adhesives, acResin-based adhesives are both the less expensive and the more sustainable solution. As a ­UV-curable 100 percent acrylic hotmelt, it contains only minimal amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and is characterized by low levels of odor and good skin compatibility. Other advantages offered by acResin are high transparency, outstanding resistance to aging and heat as well as resistance to water and chemicals. In addition, acResin helps users of adhesives to fulfill the high requirements for food contact materials.

BASF is supporting 2018 SkillsUSA winner Dylan Wertz, who will represent the U.S. at the 2019 WorldSkills competition in Kazan, Russia.
 
Private training on Glasurit was provided for Wertz at BASF’s training center in Whitehouse, Ohio, a key component to his success. He will continue his preparation for the event at another BASF training center in Istanbul, Turkey, where he will be provided one-on-one instruction and paint materials needed to perfect the technique he will use at WorldSkills in August.
 
BASF sponsors SkillsUSA, Skills Canada and local and state competitions along with WorldSkills as part of its commitment to educating and supporting young painters entering the industry. The company has focused on a strong initiative that encourages potential technicians to enter the refinish field, as well as providing different methods of learning to current technicians that keep them up to date on their skillsets and certifications. The painters at this year’s WorldSkills competition will be using BASF’s Glasurit paint and color-matching tools to show off their skills.

Due to the inherent advantages of NOR-HALS technology, the stabilizers have a lower interaction with system components and acidic environmental contaminants than traditional HALS products, thereby helping to retain the mechanical properties of TPO membranes to meet the demands of building owners.
 
Heat and UV exposure are two of the most detrimental factors affecting the useful life of roofing membranes today. Manufacturers need to fulfill the new ASTM D6878 standard for TPO roofing formulations. These standards identify the minimum levels of exposure to heat and UV levels that a TPO membrane must be able to withstand. By using BASF’s plastic additives technology, Wonpoong succeeded in winning the contract over other companies by receiving a better evaluation for weatherproofing.
 
“We tried solutions from other suppliers but got the best results with BASF’s technology,” said John Yu, director of R&D at Wonpoong Corporation. “Now we are able to ensure the polymer’s UV resistance and provide our customers with more durable products.”
 
Energy issues are growing in importance in the selection of all building materials, and roofing is no exception. Factoring in overall energy performance as part of a system’s life-cycle cost, many customers and contractors are insisting on TPO roofing membranes as they are heat-reflective. Energy efficient roofing systems can reduce a building’s internal cooling costs dramatically.

BASF implemented process improvements to provide a reliable and stable supply of its attapulgite offerings. The enhancements at their site in Quincy, Fla. include expanding of milling and product packaging capabilities for coarse gel, fine gel and granular materials, as well as improved logistics in shipping the mineral globally. 
 
For the past few years, meeting the increasing demand for attapulgite has been challenging, especially in emerging economies where construction and infrastructure development has been on the rise.
 
“We have introduced several improvements to site operations, including investments in new packaging equipment, as well as upgrading throughput in our mills. These actions will strengthen our ability to provide a reliable supply of high-quality attapulgite-based materials to support the business growth of our customers globally,” said Dr. Claus Dallner, VP, Global Business Management for Additives, BASF.
 
BASF has also improved its warehouse management system to allow for ample safety stock to offset seasonal demand spikes. 
 
Attapulgite is a naturally mined needle-like clay mineral composed of magnesium-aluminum silicate. The mineral takes its name from the town of Attapulgus, Ga., where the US supply of the mineral is found. BASF operates its attapulgite mines in this area with the manufacturing facility located approximately 17 miles south of Attapulgus in Quincy, Fla. BASF owns the majority of the 18,000 acres in Florida and Georgia supplying the plant with the product.  
 
“Our attapulgite products can help our customers reduce formulation complexity and improve efficiency. It offers very good colloidal properties, such as specific features in dispersion, high-temperature endurance, salt and alkali resistance, as well as high adsorbing and de-coloring capabilities,” said Michelle Tadlock, product manager of Attapulgite, BASF.

acResin is used to manufacture specialty products in the pressure sensitive adhesives sector. In 2018, we carried out an eco-efficiency analysis of adhesive labels for durable goods: It found that, in comparison to solvent-based adhesives, acResin-based adhesives are both the less expensive and the more sustainable solution. As a ­UV-curable 100 percent acrylic hotmelt, it contains only minimal amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and is characterized by low levels of odor and good skin compatibility. Other advantages offered by acResin are high transparency, outstanding resistance to aging and heat as well as resistance to water and chemicals. In addition, acResin helps users of adhesives to fulfill the high requirements for food contact materials.

BASF is supporting 2018 SkillsUSA winner Dylan Wertz, who will represent the U.S. at the 2019 WorldSkills competition in Kazan, Russia.
 
Private training on Glasurit was provided for Wertz at BASF’s training center in Whitehouse, Ohio, a key component to his success. He will continue his preparation for the event at another BASF training center in Istanbul, Turkey, where he will be provided one-on-one instruction and paint materials needed to perfect the technique he will use at WorldSkills in August.
 
BASF sponsors SkillsUSA, Skills Canada and local and state competitions along with WorldSkills as part of its commitment to educating and supporting young painters entering the industry. The company has focused on a strong initiative that encourages potential technicians to enter the refinish field, as well as providing different methods of learning to current technicians that keep them up to date on their skillsets and certifications. The painters at this year’s WorldSkills competition will be using BASF’s Glasurit paint and color-matching tools to show off their skills.
