LANXESS Highlights New Investment in Ningbo China

A key highlight for LANXESS during CHINACOAT is the introduction of the innovative Bayferrox New Red pigments range that is based on the development of an entirely new production process. The Ningbo Process is being used for the first time at LANXESS’ new production facility in Ningbo, China, currently the most modern plant of its kind in the world. After celebrating the completion of construction work in November 2015, the synthesis production at the new site has started in the first quarter of 2016.

“We are exhibiting our new investment in China,” said Joerg Hellwig, general manager BU Inorganic Pigments, LANXESS. “LANXESS has developed a new process, known as the Ningbo process to provide very red pigment products.”

LANXESS inorganic pigments represents a consistent combination of environmental responsibility, efficiency and quality. The newly developed Ningbo Process allows unique and high-quality red iron oxide pigments – “New Reds” – to be manufactured in an environmentally friendly way.

This new technology dramatically reduces waste gas emissions and includes a very efficient treatment system for the process water, which uses biological denitrification, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis so effectively that nearly all of the water can be returned to the process.

“It took us a long time to develop the Ningbo process,” Mr. Hellwig said. “We looked at existing processes and redeveloped the process. We do not compromise between ecology and economy.”

As an extension of its proven Bayferrox® portfolio, LANXESS will be the only company in the world to cover the full spectrum of yellow-shaded reds for high-quality paints and coatings with its New Red pigments. That is because in addition to color space of classic Penniman and Copperas pigment types, the New Red product range will also include pigments with higher red and yellow proportions than any other iron red oxide pigments currently commercially available, made possible by the innovative Ningbo Process technology.

“Many of these products being produced in our Ningbo site will be sold in Asia, but also in North America and Europe,” Mr. Hellwig said. “We are very proud to be the most modern iron oxide facility.”
