The 16th CHINACOAT Conference’s theme is “Green Coatings – Advanced Technology & New Material.” As always, the annual CHINACOAT Conference is of major importance to the coatings industry, and this year’s conference is certainly a highlight. This year’s conference is held Dec. 3-4 at the Auditorium at the Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou, China.

Prof. Dr. Jamil Baghdachi of Eastern Michigan University, who serves as the CHINACOAT Conference chairman, said that the importance of controlling pollution and developing green products made this year’s theme an ideal selection.

“China aims to reduce 40% to 45% of carbon emissions per unit of GDP by 2020,” Dr. Baghdachi observed. “Since the inception of the 13th Five-Year Plan, stricter environmental regulations have empowered the authority to control pollution from industry, commercial operations and pursue sustainability principles, and environmental health. For the coatings industry, major industrial processes and regulated products, such as architectural paints, vehicle refinishing paints, vessel paints, printing inks, etc. are subject to much tighter controls. The government has also created incentives for pollution control and encouraged manufacturers to develop green products.

As Dr. Baghdachi said, the coatings and ink industries are seen as important areas for improvement, and companies are already taking steps to meet and exceed the new goals.

“The China authority is determined to speed up the ‘Green’ process in the coatings industry,” he added. “In fact, many companies have established green goals for themselves and implemented environmental initiatives within their business practices. In the past editions, CHINACOAT have seen many more exhibitors embracing and practicing environmental stewardship. Many of them have developed new products and solutions to meet demand for green coatings, and also manufactured products in following green methodologies. CHINACOAT2018 will have over 1270 exhibitors, over 50% of them claiming to offer green products and solutions for coatings and ink industries.”
