At the 2009 European Coatings Show (ECS), Cognis’ Functional Products Strategic Business Unit is presenting a broad variety of solutions for manufacturers of paints and coatings. These will include new “green” defoamers, new highly efficient rheology modifiers, “green” dispersing agents and a natural oil-based coalescent for water-based coatings.
At the show, Cognis will present a range of new “green” defoamers based on renewable raw materials. They offer a state-of-the-art performing and eco-friendly alternative to mineral oil defoamers for a wide range of water-based architectural paints. Because the products contain no VOCs and only very low levels of SVOCs (semi-volatile organic compounds), they enable manufacturers to obtain environmental quality and safety certifications such as the EU Eco-Label, the Blue Angel or the German TÜV seal.
Cognis has also developed a range of patented nonionic thickeners for water-based coatings. Based on polyurethane derivatives they are completely free of hazardous solvents and heavy metals and VOC- and odor-free. Cognis rheology modifiers enable product formulators to achieve rheological profiles ranging from Newtonian (for brush coatings) to highly pseudoplastic (for spray coatings).
Another group of products on show will be “green” wetting and dispersing agents for aqueous coatings. These are free from environmentally harmful solvents and alkylphenolethoxylates (APEOs), and are suitable for use in a wide range of applications, from pigment combinations to emulsion paints for both architectural and industrial use.
Cognis will also showcase a natural oil-based coalescent that is more efficient in lowering the minimum film forming temperature (MFFT) and enables exterior coatings to harden faster and to improve dirt pick-up and scratch resistance.
