Among the many activities for Evonik at this year’s European Coatings show, the company announced that a new production plant is on stream in China. MATCH (Methacrylates to China) is the project name under which Evonik Industries is currently installing an integrated methacrylates production facility in Shanghai.

Seven interlinked plants will work together to produce Methyl methacrylate (MMA), further methacrylic monomers and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The main focus is on the rapidly growing Chinese market, but the plants are also included in the worldwide logistics chain via global sales planning. The first plant successfully started up in the third quarter of 2008. In December 2008, the multipurpose unit for producing high-quality methacrylate specialty esters went on stream.

These monomers are predominantly used in the plastics and adhesives industries, but also in the coatings industry. With this unit, Evonik Industries is considerably boosting its production capacity for this product group and supplies customers all over the world with monomers from Shanghai. Further plants belonging to the integrated network are set to go into operation in the course of 2009, like the MMA facility with an annual capacity of 100 kt.

Also at the show, the Business Line Industrial Specialties of Evonik has launched a set of new additives that are in compliance with food contact regulations like 2002/72/EC, FDA 175.105 or BfR 14. The set consists of the two defoamers TEGO Antifoam 2291 and TEGO Antifoam 4-94 as well as the Newtonian PU thickener TEGO Rheo 8600. These products now allow Evonik to supply performance additives for adhesives that are not limited in their applications by registration issues.

Evonik’s Crosslinkers Business Line in the market segment Coatings, Adhesives & Printing Inks has launched VESTAGON EP-HA 376 and VESTAGON EP-SC 5050. These products are designed to help users reduce their costs without having to accept any losses in quality, these products are in keeping with Evonik’s “Smart Formulating” concept.

In addition, Evonik Specialty Resins have new names: TEGO AddBond and TEGO VariPlus. Evonik also announced a portfolio expansion in reactive hotmelts. SILIKOPONEC—a silicone epoxy hybrid resin—was also launched.

On the color front, Evonik launched Colour Black FW 171 pigment for water-based coating formulations. In addition, new pigment preparations were added to the INXEL line.
