DURABLE FIRE-RETARDANT
INTUMESCENT COATING
Patent No. Europe 1,377,644
Chance and Hunt Ltd. and Ferro
Ltd. have received a patent for
durable, fire-retardant intumescent
coatings with good physical properties
useful on steelwork. The coatings,
which are easy to apply and
cure quickly, are comprised of 30-
60% weight sodium, potassium or
ammonium polyphosphate containing
material which decomposes to
phosphoric acid on exposure to fire,
10-30% weight thermosetting
(epoxy) binder, 2.5-10% weight (phenolic)
curing agent, five to 40%
weight thermoplastic (aldehyde or
ketone) binder, zero to 10% weight
hydrogenated castor oil melt viscosity
modifier and zero to 10% weight
of titanium dioxide colorant.
