PPG patents undercoating layers providing improved photoactive topcoat functionality

U.S. 8,133,599 B2
PPG Industries has received a patent for a coated article comprised of a substrate; a first coating formed over at least a portion of the substrate, the first coating is comprised of a mixture of at least two oxides selected from the group consisting of oxides of P, Si, Ti, Al and Zr; and a photoactive coating formed over at least a portion of the first coating, wherein the first coating is a multi-layer coating comprised of a first layer comprised of phosphorous oxide, silica and titania, with silica present in the range of 70%-80% volume; a second layer comprised of phosphorous oxide, silica and titania, with silica present in the range of 48%-62% volume; and a third layer comprised of phosphorous oxide, silica and titania, with silica present in the range of 70%-80% volume.
