The Architectural Coating Industry in Türkiye

Domestic producers such as Dyo Paints, Eges Boya, and Terraco Paints are leading architectural coating producers in Türkiye, while major international coating producers have also established domestic manufacturing in the country.

Few countries occupy a strategic location as pivotal as Türkiye. Located at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and the Middle East, the country has emerged as one of the largest consumers and producers of paint and coating products in the region during the last two decades. Coatings World presents an overview of architectural coating industry in Türkiye in this feature.

Architectural Coatings in Türkiye

With a total consumption of 740,000 tons (2024) of paint and coating products, the architectural segment is the largest component of the Turkish coating industry. In value terms, the country’s architectural coating industry is estimated at $1.45 billion. Value as a proportion of volume is increasing year-on-year, indicating increasing usage of higher value/premium products.

The architectural segment accounts for about 60% of the total volume of the overall coating industry. The industry is served by approximately 20 large-scale producers and a large number of small and mid-scale paint producers, who serve niche segments and selected geographical pockets.

Repainting and renovation account for about three-fourths of total architectural coatings consumption, while new construction accounts for about 26% of the demand.

Despite the sizable production and consumption of architectural coating products, per-capita consumption of these products is below the consumption levels of many European countries and the US, indicating that there is further opportunities for improvement and opportunities for domestic architectural coating producers.

The vibrant construction sector and the country’s huge population have offered the country’s architectural coating producers a host of opportunities. The Turkish construction market is experiencing a massive boom. The construction sector registered a high growth of 10.6% in 2025, which was supported by a stable 3.4% economic growth.

Estimated at $190 billion, the country’s construction sector is rapidly growing on account of the urgent need for housing following the unfortunate earthquake of 2023, housing demand from a huge population, and commercial construction across the country.

According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), housing sales in Türkiye increased by 14.3% in 2025 compared to the previous year, reaching 1,688,910 units, despite economic fluctuations and high interest rates. Second-hand housing sales increased by 15.6% year-on-year, reaching 1,148,124 units.

The downward trend in interest rates and rising rental prices are among the main factors driving households toward home ownership and supporting home purchasing decisions. For 2026, housing projects in the earthquake zone, urban transformation activities, and alternative financing models are expected to remain key drivers supporting housing sales.

With a population of more than 86 million, Türkiye is one of the most populated countries in the region. The country adds an additional 1 million people every year. The rapid urbanization process, which has resulted in more than 24 urban centers with populations over 1 million, is expected to play a key role in the demand for architectural paint and coating products for the foreseeable future.

The high urbanization rate in Türkiye has also played a key role in the growth of architectural coatings. Architectural coating consumption is always higher in urban centers as compared to rural areas. In Türkiye, 93.6% of the population was residing in provincial and district centers at the end of 2025, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute. The share of those living in towns and villages is 6.4%

Japan’s Kansai Paint acquired a 50 percent stake in Türkiye’s Polisan Holding’s paint unit, Polisan Boya, for $113 million in 2016.

The most notable acquisition in the Turkish architectural coating industry took place in 2019, when Japanese paint major Nippon Paints acquired a stake in Turkish company Betek Boya. At the time of acquisition, Betek had 26% share of the domestic architectural coating market. Betek has five production facilities (two in Gebze, one each in Kayseri, Balikesir, and Rize) in Türkiye and one in Egypt. The company’s installed capacity of decorative paints is 350,000 tons per annum. This acquisition made Kansai Paint the most dominant producer of architectural coatings in the country.

Norwegian company Jotun has been operating in Turkiye since 1989. The company operates two production (one for architectural coatings and the other for powder coating) facilities in Turkiye.

Other major global producers such as PPG, Beckers, Hempel, KCC, and Axalta operate through distributors based in Istanbul and other major cities.

Turkish coating producers are increasingly exporting significant volume of their total output. In 2025, leading producer Dyo Boya exported $15 million worth of paint products to 32 countries.
