Lubrizol has announced Lanco 8020 SF, a next-generation, 100% bio-based, microplastic-free micronized wax engineered to elevate appearance, protection and application efficiency in low VOC, water-based wood coating systems. Part of Lubrizol’s well-established Lanco™ portfolio of surface-enhancing additives, this new surface modifier technology helps formulators reduce dependency on fossil-based materials by using renewable raw materials—while still delivering excellent matting, a soft surface feel, improved mechanical performance and reliable, uniform surface quality.

Developed for interior and exterior water-based wood coatings—including UV-curing, clear and pigmented systems—Lanco 8020 SF supports modern low VOC and bio-designed formulations without compromising finish quality. By combining renewable content with a microplastic-free design, the product helps coating manufacturers align with sustainability goals and prepare for tighter requirements and increased scrutiny around intentionally added microplastics—supporting compliance planning and future-ready formulations.

Key Performance Benefits of Lanco™ 8020 SF

Easy to use in low‑VOC, water‑based wood coatings with smooth dispersion and fast incorporation

Efficient, consistent matting across a wide gloss range for reliable appearance control and soft feel.

Lower levels vs. conventional waxes, supporting cost efficiency and formulation flexibility

Improves durability (scratch/abrasion resistance and surface toughness) while being 100% bio‑based to boost renewable content and support sustainability goals/eco labels

Advancing Surface Modifier Technology with the Lanco Portfolio

As part of Lubrizol’s comprehensive Lanco™ Surface Modifiers family, Lanco 8020 SF aims to provide formulators with a versatile, easy-to-use additive that strengthens both aesthetic and functional properties in demanding coating environments. In addition to these performance advantages, Lanco 8020 SF brings sustainability attributes that are increasingly important for formulators today—including a 100% bio-based composition and a microplastic-free classification—helping teams meet renewable-content targets while also supporting regulatory readiness as the coatings industry moves toward stricter expectations for intentionally added microplastics.

“Lanco 8020 SF expands our ability to support customers looking for reliable surface-enhancing solutions,” said Miriam Peralta, Global Strategic Marketing Manager at Lubrizol. “In addition to the balanced performance and formulation flexibility the market expects from the Lanco™ product family, this new grade helps formulators advance sustainability priorities with a 100% bio-based, microplastic-free design tailored for modern low VOC, water-based wood coating systems.”

Supporting Coatings That Look Better and Last Longer

With increasing performance requirements across water-based wood coatings, Lanco 8020 SF is positioned to help formulators achieve higher standards of durability, finish quality and process efficiency. Final product data, application guidance and incorporation recommendations will be provided upon commercial release.
