Hempel has completed construciton of its first factory in Russia. This event marks an important step towards fulfilling a vision of providing increased local support and service to customers in Russia and the wider Eurasian region. This new factory is Hempel’s 28th globally, and in Russia, it is the company’s first site for locally produced coatings. Using the latest state of the art technology in productivity, including automatic dosing systems, high-speed filling lines, and robotic palletizing, the Ulyanovsk factory will produce anticorrosive coatings for the major markets in which Hempel operates, namely marine repair and shipbuilding, infrastructure, oil and gas, mining and power segments. When asked about the choice of the Ulyanovsk site for the Hempel factory, Jesper Bodtkjer, Vice President Europe, Hempel A/S, states: “We are pleased to have chosen Ulyanovsk for the factory location because of the well-organized local facilities and infrastructure, and the central geographic location optimizing our delivery service to customers in Russia and rest of the Eurasian Economic Union. We are most grateful to the Ulyanovsk Regional Authorities who have been very supportive throughout the entire process of establishing our facility.” Creating new – and safe – jobs Hempel contributes to local development in Russia by creating new employment and career opportunities. More than 50 people have been hired to work at the factory in Ulyanovsk, and this number is projected to rise to approximately 100 as production output grows. “Hempel places great importance on being close to the market and possessing a high degree of customer orientation. Meeting end-user needs and supplying an outstanding local service are the hallmarks of our company. By hiring talented local employees and providing them with training that meets Hempel’s global standards, it can create a combination that achieves a real competitive edge in the market and a benefit for the local community,” says Peter de Groot, General Director, ZAO Hempel. The factory has been equipped with modern and safe equipment for both the employees and the environment, meeting Hempel’s strict global Health, Safety & Environment policies and all Russian regulations. The plant also features a recycling of process liquids, soil pollution prevention, and firewater collection. The factory completion ceremony took place on 1 December 2015, and scaled-up production is scheduled to begin in early 2016. Facts about the Ulyanovsk factory The Ulyanovsk is Hempel’s 28th factory worldwide, the first in Russia, and is situated on 7 hectares of land. Once running, it is capable to produce 16 million litres per year. The factory has been built to the highest standards and features the latest state of the art technology in productivity (e.g. automatic dosing system, high speed filling and robotic palletizing) and in EHS (e.g. recycling of process liquids, process ventilation air cleaning, and soil pollution prevention as well as firewater collection). The factory will use locally sourced Russian raw materials where these meet Hempel’s high quality standards. The construction of the factory was carried out by local Ulyanovsk firm, UTS, for the buildings, while Netzsch has delivered key production equipment of which a significant part is produced locally in Russia. The factory will produce Hempel’s global range of coatings, including anti-corrosive protective coatings for marine vessels, steel infrastructure, bridges, power stations, refineries, chemical plants, offshore and onshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and transportation infrastructure as well as many new products developed specifically for Russia’s unique climatic and market conditions. In this region, Hempel is present in Moscow (Head Office) St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Murmansk, Astrakhan, Rostov-on, Vladivostok, Rybinsk, Krasnoyarsk, and now Ulyanovsk in Russia, Kiev and Odessa in Ukraine, Baku in Azerbaijan, and Atyrau and Aktau in Kazakhstan.
