Kusumgar, Nerlfi & Growney is pleased to announce the commencement of its third Global Coating & Ink Additives study. According to the firm, global consumption of the five leading additives (dispersants, rheology modifiers, foam control, slip/rub and wetting agents) in coatings and inks in 2017 is a projected 2.7 billion pounds worth over $5 billion. The estimated 95 billion pounds of coating produced worldwide in 2017 will consume 92 percent of the additive volume and the 8.4 billion pounds of ink the remainder. Each additive is typically incorporated at about a percent or less of a formulation but can dramatically improve the stability, application, appearance and/or performance properties. Rheology modifiers are the leading additive type with 38 percent of the volume and 36 percent of the dollar value. Rheology modifiers include inorganic, synthetic and cellulose types. Dispersants are next in size with one-fifth of the pounds and 18 percent of the dollars. They range from high volume types for titanium dioxide in architectural paints to highly specialized polymeric varieties for a specific pigment and coating or ink technology. Foam control additives are third with 17 percent of the volume and value and vary from higher performance silicone, surfactant and polymer-based products to mineral oil types. Slip/rub materials are 12 percent of the volume and 15 percent of the dollars with silicone and wax products employed. Wetting agents are 12 percent of the pounds and 13 percent of the dollars and include high volume alkoxylated surfactants and the more specialized silicone, acrylic, acetylenic glycol derivatives and flurosurfactant kinds. The above information is based upon Kusumgar, Nerlfi & Growney’s upcoming multiclient study, Global Coating & Ink Additives, 2017-2022 which is available through subscription.
