Nor Shipping 2025 reaction

Marine industry leaders gathered at Nor-Shipping this week, with a focus on the key challenges and opportunities driving the transition to a lower-carbon future.
In recent years, vessel operators have had to navigate a growing wave of regulation – including the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), FuelEU Maritime, and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) – as the industry charts a course toward net-zero emissions by 2050.

With these ambitious goals in mind, fouling control systems have never been more critical in helping shipowners cut carbon emissions and improve efficiency to stay compliant.

Barry Kidd, Vessel Performance Manager at AkzoNobel, shared his reflections on this year’s Nor-Shipping:

“One of the standout themes at this year’s Nor-Shipping is the growing importance of ensuring that energy-saving investments are formally recognised by third-party institutions – whether it’s hull coatings or onboard technologies. For many operators, particularly in the bulker segment, that kind of recognition has a direct impact on how vessels are prioritised for chartering and peer comparison. There was also a strong focus on futureproofing, and the importance of making decisions today that not only deliver short-term gains but create long-term value. That’s where tools like the Intertrac® Vision platform from International® come in, helping customers understand both the immediate and future implications of their investments. We’re noticing a shift toward medium and long-term planning, and the industry is becoming more strategic in how it approaches performance.
“Another key takeaway is the value of customer collaboration. Customers now seek continuous support beyond dry dockings and benefit from expert guidance throughout the vessel’s lifecycle. We’re here to offer expert guidance and solutions to help support our customers and their vessel across its lifecycle.”
