A. Demand in the wood coatings market has been shifting toward waterborne and low-VOC products due to regulatory changes and customer sustainability initiatives. Sustainability is a hot topic, especially in Europe where the industry is looking for acrylics with a low-carbon footprint.
Unprecedented growth in the housing market and the recent renovation boom have contributed to high demand in the wood coatings market, despite headwinds from lumber price increases.
Q. Tell us about the performance attributes that are driving growth in this market.
A. The market requires that waterborne products achieve the same performance as solventborne products with properties that streamline production and improve throughput, such as fast dry times. Also, attributes that increase durability, like chemical resistance, water resistance and scratch resistance, are also in demand.
Q. What products does EPS offer for wood coatings formulators?
A. In North America, we offer the EPS® 2400 line of waterborne acrylic resins that wood coating formulators can use to develop high-performance solutions for industrial applications, as well as cabinetry, furniture and flooring uses. For example, EPS® 2420 is a binder for interior and exterior wood applications with exceptional leveling properties, UV resistance and in-can transparency. EPS® 2452 can be used as the principal vehicle for white pigmented high-performance furniture and wood finishes and offers coffee and ethanol resistance. EPS® 2426 is used as a wood edge sealer for lumber. This product is an acrylic emulsion with excellent early water resistance. Also worth highlighting is EPS® 2533, for primer applications, which offers exceptional tannin stain block and early water resistance.
In Europe, we have a broad line of products for OEM coatings and architectural wood coatings in the DYFLEX LP and PC-Mull product lines. For example, DYFLEXTM LP 1225 is a binder for interior and exterior wood applications with exceptional flexibility and exterior durability, and DYFLEXTM LP 1700 is for high-performance furniture and wood finishes. PC-Mull VP 435 is a self-crosslinking, all-acrylic copolymer dispersion used as a binder for high-quality pigmented wood coatings. PC-Mull 1016W is best in class for fast hardness development and block resistance, suitable for fast industrial lines.
Q. Any plans to expand the industrial wood portfolio?
A. We are launching a new product in North America, EPS® 2436, a self-crosslinking, all-acrylic dispersion used as a binder for high-quality wood coatings that delivers good clarity, and excellent chemical resistance and mechanical properties. EPS® 2436 can be used to formulate topcoats and self-sealers.
Q. Tell us more about EPS.
A. EPS® manufactures high-performance acrylic resins and colorants for the construction, industrial and architectural coatings industries and adhesives formulators. We work with our customers to offer technical and formulation support to help them bring the best products to market.
