Global specialty additives producer TOTAL Cray Valley (TCV) will be presenting new styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymer technology at the 2017 National Printing Ink Research Institute Conference (NPIRI). The new SMA additives can be used to more efficiently disperse a wide variety of pigments for maximum color strength in both water-based inks and coatings. TCV’s Senior Applications Manager William Dougherty will discuss usage of the new SMA1550H copolymer resin additive to enhance water-based pigment dispersion. He will also discuss how it can be used as a flexographic ink transfer aid for both high solids magenta and high solids carbon black inks. The presentation will be given during the technical session on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 8 a.m. For many years, SMA copolymers have been successfully used as both water based pigment dispersants and as transfer additives in flexographic printing inks. SMA copolymer resins are credited with helping the ink film split off of the rubber blanket and deposit onto the substrate without a lot of misting or printing defects during the flexographic printing process. The 2017 NPIRI Conference will take place October 10-12, in Oak Brook, Ill.
