Covestro completed construction on its new polyurethane dispersion (PUD) production facility in Shanghai, China. This new facility will be producing waterborne PUDs to boost properties equal to the performance of solvent-based types and grades with more circular components.
The facility will also address rising demands for environmentally compatible coatings and adhesives in Asia Pacific for the construction, automotive, furniture, footwear, and packaging industries.
The plant is located inside Covestro Integrated Site Shanghai (CISS). To speed up construction lead time, individual modules were built in Nantong, Jiangsu providence to be transported and assembled at the final site.
“With the new facility we aim to offer the broadest portfolio of PUDs to support the sustainability efforts of downstream industries here in Asia Pacific. The modular concept adopted in the construction phase will also enable us to implement future investment projects and build up capacity more efficiently to capture market demand,” said chief technology officer, Thorsten Dreier.
With the new plant Covestro will be able to continue to enhance capability to supply PUD, support sustainability trends in coating and adhesives industry in Asia Pacific.
President of Covestro China, Holly Lei commented, “with this new PUD facility, we are even better positioned to meeting the growing market demand for more sustainable materials in China and Asia Pacific. It also further enhanced the capability of Covestro Integrated Site Shanghai, which plays a key role for us as we support our customers’ sustainability journey.”
More circular PUDs with a share of biobased or bicircular raw materials will be offered from the Shanghai plant to help customers reduce their carbon footprint. In 2021 CISS received its ISCC PLUS certification to allow it to supply mass-balanced products in large volumes.
To make sustainable products easier to distinguish, Covestro introduced the suffix “CQ,” standing for “Circular Intelligence” which identifies products containing a minimum of 25% alternative raw materials.
