Arkema has introduced a number of new resin products at the American Coatings Show.
ENCOR Flex 192 Resin for use in primer-free elastomeric roof coatings. When properly formulated, coatings made with this new resin can adhere effectively to a wide variety of roofing membranes, including aged thermoplastic olefin (TPO), without the use of a solvent-borne primer.
“Roof coatings, and white roof coatings in particular, are one of the fastest growing applications in the industry today” John Hiel, North America marketing manager, explained. “As the market continues to expand, we are continually looking for ways to improve performance, affordability and sustainability in roof coating materials. ENCOR Flex 192 resin offers significant improvements in adhesion, toughness and dirt pick up resistance when compared to traditional materials.”
Improvements can include significantly lower overall system VOCs, decreased labor and material costs, as well as a longer service life for the roof itself as maintenance becomes a more realistic option long term. ENCOR Flex 192 binder is also suitable for other typical elastomeric coating applications, including wall coatings over a variety of cementitious substrates.
“By reducing the labor and secondary costs associated with coating TPO roofing materials, market potential for these applications can increase significantly,” Hiel said. “Working with customers in the industry, we will continue to look for new ways to achieve the high performance required while, where possible, reducing costs and improving sustainability.”
Arkema also introduced SYNOLAC Versa high-solids alkyd resins for paints and stains. This new product platform offers the performance of conventional alkyds in low-VOC formulations.
“Using this novel new line of products, formulators can develop alkyd-based coatings with lower VOCs, faster dry time and better hardness development,” Michael Iwaniw, North American Business Manager, explained. “The potential results include better coating performance, lower costs and improved sustainability.”
To achieve these properties, Arkema developed a new and unique polymer backbone around which multiple products can be formulated. The company is currently working with formulators worldwide to explore applications across many industries, including agricultural machinery coatings, earthmoving and construction equipment coatings, aerosol paints, traffic paints, marine and protective coatings, industrial wood coatings, industrial maintenance coatings and architectural coatings.
“In speaking with customers serving these industries, we identified a unique combination of needs that weren’t being met with more traditional products and technologies,” Iwaniw said. “The SYNOLAC Versa product line was developed specifically to meet those needs.”
Arkema's North America Commercial Director, Eric Dumain said that he was quite impressed with the turnout at ACS 2018 for the first day. "Already we have seen the show has been vibrant. I've seen a number of international people and it's growing. Arkema has a broader presence here."
Arkema Coating Resins offers a wide range of water and solvent-based resins and related products for formulators of architectural coatings, industrial finishes, construction, traffic paints, sealants and adhesives.
Arkema Coating Resins offers a wide range of chemistries with the performance and processing advantages formulators need to develop products for many different applications.
