Leading resins manufacturers are frequently introducing new technologies to the market. What follows is information on these new innovations from select manufacturers, in their own words.
Arkema: Synolac Versa High-Solids Alkyd for paints and stains.
“This new product platform offers the performance of conventional alkyds in low-VOC formulations,” said Eric Dumain, North America commercial director. “Improvements include faster dry times and hardness in high solids low VOC alkyd coatings used across many industries, including agricultural machinery coatings, earthmoving and construction equipment coatings, aerosol paints, traffic paints, marine and protective coatings, industrial wood coatings, industrial maintenance coatings and architectural coatings.”
ENCOR Flex 192 Resin for use in primer-free elastomeric roof coatings. “When properly formulated, coatings made using this new resin can adhere effectively to thermoplastic olefin (TPO) roofing membranes without the use of a solvent-borne primer,” Dumain said. “The results can include significantly reduced labor and material costs, as well as a longer service life for the roof itself as maintenance becomes a more realistic option long term. ENCOR Flex 192 binder is also suitable for other typical elastomeric coating applications, including wall coatings over a variety of cementitious substrates.”
Evonik: TEGO AddBond LP 1600 and TEGO AddBond LP 1611. These new polyester adhesion resins “have excellent flow properties and are suitable for food contact,” said Markus Hallack head of Silicone Resin Technology. “Additionally, they reduce viscosity without increasing the VOC content of the coating. This unique combination of characteristics allows for their use as adhesion resins in high solids applications, with suitability particularly for large industrial items that are not coated in an industrial environment.”
Georgia Pacific: GP BKS-2605 resin for drum and pail applications “enables our customers to produce low VOC coatings with outstanding chemical resistance and metal adhesion characteristics,” said Robert Schlager, account manager for Coatings. GP BKS-2605 resin “contains higher solids than our popular GP BKS-2600 resin.”
Hexion: EPOSILTM Resin 5550 “for high value coatings with superior weatherability and reduced dirt pick-up,” according to Ann Frederix, senior vice president, Epoxy Specialties. “This hybrid resin is also suitable for anti-graffiti or higher temperature coatings.
“The second is our newest member of the EPI-REZTM family of high performance epoxy dispersions,” Frederix added. “When EPI-REZ Resin 7720-W-50 is combined with EPIKURETM Curing Agent 6870-W-50, this system can be formulated into ultra- low VOC coatings (less than 50 g/L) for protection of concrete, masonry or metal substrates.”
Polynt: “UROTUF F275 is an innovative solvent-borne oil modified urethane for meeting 275g/L VOC varnishes,” Applications Manager Matthew Hayden said. “This product addresses the need for lower VOC urethane formulations without sacrificing the toughness and durability inherent in conventional urethanes.
“UROTUF F108 – T8W-45 is a high solids, anionic stabilized, low VOC and NMP free water-borne oil modified urethane polymer provided at 45 percent solids in a blend of tripropylene glycol mono methyl ether (TPM) and water,” he added. “It can be formulated into low VOC varnishes <100 g/L with the addition of metallic drier.”
Siltech: “Our latest reactive silicones are Silmer TMS products which have trialkoxysilane functionality for reacting into condensation cured systems,” Global Marketing and Sales Manager Bob Ruckle said. “These have been showing some unexpected properties in superhydrophobic research and several commercial products. We have also introduced Silmer OHT materials which have dihydroxyalkyl chains. These provide anti-graffiti and release properties.”
Specialty Polymers, Inc.: RayCore 9570 – “This is a new product that is a polyurethane-acrylic core shell hybrid that has outstanding chemical, scratch and UV resistance,” President Sheryl Southwell said. “It has excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates and has outstanding gloss. Its chemical resistance is equal to a 100 percent PUD, and the corrosion resistance is better.”
RayVace 692 – “This is a new polyvinyl acrylic emulsion enhanced with vinyl versatate creating a highly-branched polymer that exhibits excellent alkali and efflorescence resistance on concrete and masonry,” Southwell said. “Coatings formulated with this product offer a cost-effective option for flat exterior paints on cementitious substrates.”
Sun Chemical: BURNOCK AC 2530 “This new acrylic polyol for air dry melamine technology from Sun Chemical’s Advanced Materials division brings the same performance properties widely desired from a stoving system to an air-dry system,” said Michael T. Venturini, marketing director, Coatings. “There are no baking ovens required and no pot-life limitations with the BURNOCK AC 2530 polyol while providing the same durability as heat-cured systems.”
WATERSOL AC-7505 “This resin developed by DIC Corporation and delivered by Sun Chemical Advanced Materials provides a desirable metallic finish on automotive interior plastic without a clearcoat,” Venturini said. “The 2K chemistry offers the chemical resistance needed in a single layer system, reducing complication in coating application and at the same time passing the industry’s most demanding sunscreen tests.”
