The paint and coatings industry has seen a lot of merger and acquisition activity, most notably PPG entering into an agreement to sell its US and Canada architectural paints business to American Industrial Partners and Sudarshan Chemical looking to add Heubach Group.
Here are some of the key moves we are watching, beginning with the most recent; we will add to the list as new acquisitions are reported:

Comments: CIN acquired Hempel Industrial B.V., based in the Netherlands. The transaction adds a new industrial unit to CIN’s group, contributing to an annual turnover of approximately €15 million. Established in 1830, Schaepman Lakfabrieken B.V. earned a reputation for innovation in the industrial coatings sector, becoming a trusted name in the Netherlands and beyond. In 2014, Hempel acquired the company, retiring the Schaepman brand. With this acquisition, CIN plans to revive the historic Schaepman name as part of its strategy.

Comments: Sudarshan Chemical Industries Limited (SCIL) has entered into a definitive agreement with the Heubach Group, on its acquisition in a combination of an asset and share deal. This strategic acquisition will create a global pigment company, combining SCIL’s operations and expertise with Heubach's technological capabilities. Post-acquisition, the combined company will have a broad pigment portfolio and a strong presence in major markets including Europe and the Americas. It will enhance SCIL’s product portfolio and a diversified asset footprint across 19 sites globally. The acquisition is expected to close in three to four months, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions, including approvals from regulators and SCIL shareholders.

Comments: Kelly-Moore Paint Company, the 37th largest worldwide paint company according to our 2023 Top Companies Report, immediately ceased operations in January 2024. The decision to close was driven largely cash drains caused by asbestos legal settlements, which have totaled approximately $600 million with more liabilities expected.
