In recent years, warmth and a sense of nature have been overriding trends when homeowners select colors for their home’s interiors and exteriors. This certainly remains the case for many homeowners today, and Miller Paint, a leading independent Pacific Northwest paint manufacturer, reflects this sentiment in selecting Mushroom R012 as its 2024 Color of the Year.
Part of Miller Paint’s Northwest Color Collection, Mushroom R012 can be described as an earthy neutral which creates a balance between warmth and brightness.
“Mushroom|R012 takes its cue from the surrounding forests in our region,” said Puji Sherer, Vice President of Marketing, Color & Brand at Miller Paint. “An integral part of our natural world, mushrooms support the colorful life that grows up from our soil. Our 2024 Color of the Year mimics nature and is a beautiful backdrop for our home spaces.”
Sherer observed that Mushroom is a hue that offers versatility to the homeowner.
“There are many different color stories circulating in the design world from bold and bright hues that embrace maximalism to calm and grounding neutrals that support organic living,” Sherer observed. “By choosing the warm white Mushroom for our Color of the Year, we are elevating a hue that can fit easily into any architectural or design style.
“Mushroom is a versatile hue that brings out the beauty of your chosen aesthetic,” Sherer added. “It can flex from subdued and soothing to elegant and sophisticated with ease. It’s ability to be a gentle backdrop for living made it the perfect selection for this year’s Color of the Year.”
Sherer said that Mushroom strikes a balance between warmth and brightness.
“Complex yet calming, this hue shows tints of reddish brown and greenish gray as the light shifts throughout the day,” she added. “It can be used as an all-over hue for ceilings, walls, and trim or be used in specific architectural applications that highlight whichever color it is paired with.
“For example, if used on walls next to bright white trim, Mushroom will appear richer and deeper, more like a linen-inspired off-white,” Sherer pointed out. “If used on trim against a bold wall color, it will appear lighter and brighter but still soften the contrast between the walls and trim when compared to a stark white. “
Miller Paint offers a variety of hues from its Northwest Color Collection, and Mushroom interacts nicely with these colors wherever the homeowner may wish to use it. Miller Paint describes these hues as:
● Foliage|R063 - A soft sage green with a touch of blue, this soothing hue just feels good. Use on cabinets to make a soft statement.
● Bronzite|R053 - This greenish gold offers a natural glow to any space. Use this color in a living room or den and strike up a conversation.
● Fresh Water|R076 - Cool and refreshing, this clear blue begs you to jump in and stay awhile. Consider using this hue on a kitchen island or bar where an accent is needed.
● Mossy Driftwood|R064 - The perfect cabin or cottage color, this color blends green and brown with ease. An easy choice for exteriors, this color will act as a neutral for any other colors you want to pair with it.
● Chocolate Opal|R130 - A nurturing neutral, this color terracotta hue is easy to love. Use in kitchens and dining rooms to make a statement, but in a more relaxed way than red.
● Barn Rafter|R130 - A rich, chalky brown can be used as an alternative to gray or black for an earthy elegance on exteriors. More timeless than trendy, this color is grounded in confidence and complexity.
“The Northwest Color Collection was designed to be a harmonious collection of 132 hues,” said Sherer. “A majority of the colors from the Northwest Collection possess grayish undertones that make it easy to put a complementary palette together for both interior and exterior combinations.”
Last year, Miller Paint selected Unity, a terra-cotta hue with hints of peach, pink and brown, as the 2023 Color of the Year. Sherer sees Mushroom as a natural follow-up to Unity.
“The brownish undertones that can be seen in Mushroom complement the earthy terra-cotta Unity that leans towards pink,” Sherer concluded. “I love this color combination so much that I recently painted my own bathroom with Unity on the walls and ceiling and Mushroom on the trim with beautiful results.”
