It’s really interesting to see what colors become the next hot choice for homeowners when it comes to painting their homes. Some people opt for neutrals, while blues and greens remain popular.
As part of its research into what colors are trending, Behr Paint conducts surveys of homeowners to see what they like. This year, red was among to most popular choices; Behr’s research noted that 76% of Americans say they would consider painting a room or a wall a shade of red, with accent walls, bedrooms, and front doors at the top of their wish lists. This year’s selection, Rumors, can best be described as a deep ruby red that adds warmth and elegance both in and outside the home.
“When selecting our Color of the Year Rumors, we considered global trends and lifestyle influences such as music, fashion, and travel,” said Erika Woelfel, Behr’s vice president of color and creative services. “For 2025, we identified a shift towards people incorporating bolder colors in their space. Recent research commissioned by Behr supports this, with a majority of Americans agreeing that red is currently ‘on-trend’.”
“In recent years, we’ve seen consumers craving bolder hues and expressive color moments that make an impact,” added Woelfel. “While neutrals will never go out of style, rich colors like Rumors are an approachable way for people to add more color to their spaces while also appealing to those who already gravitate toward colorful shades.”
Woelfel noted that Rumors is part of Behr’s 2025 Color Trends palette, a curated collection of forward-thinking, livable colors to express any style and enhance any environment.
“The palette ranges from tantalizing warm tones to cooler stunning shades,” she added. “Many of the shades are warm and welcoming as we anticipate the continued desire to create cozy living environments amongst homeowners.”
Woelfel sees opportunities for Rumors for highlighting a space inside or outside. Behr’s survey showed that 86% of the people surveyed feel that homes with red front doors stand out from others, while 84% say that a small pop of red in a room catches their attention.
“For exterior projects, try Rumors on the front door or window shutters for an eye-catching statement,” said Woelfel. “For interior projects, embrace Rumors as an accent in living spaces or color drench an entire dining room for a captivating look. A dynamic tone, Rumors creates timeless charm in any environment.”
Last year, Cracked Pepper was Behr Paint’s Color of the Year, and Rumors pairs nicely with that black hue.
“Rumors is a versatile and approachable shade of red that creates a dramatic and edgy look when paired with Cracked Pepper,” Woelfel observed. “The pairing works well in spaces where you want to make a statement, with Rumors serving as an accent color or on a feature wall, and Cracked Pepper balancing out the red tones on surrounding walls or trim. The overall effect is a sophisticated, dynamic color scheme.”
