Q: Sanjay, for professionals new to the coatings industry, who is Lubrizol Performance Coatings?
A. Hello Kerry. Lubrizol is a specialty chemical company, pioneering innovations for diverse markets and applications since our founding in 1928. Lubrizol’s Performance Coatings business is an innovator of resins, dispersants, wax additives, and other specialty additives for coatings, inks, and composites. We are known for our expertise in coloration, dispersion, adhesion, and surface protection technologies.  We collaborate closely with customers to develop products that bring realizable value for them as well as end-users. In fact, that’s the essence of our value proposition – to continue close collaboration with customers, to remain steadfast in our commitment to innovation, and to be a reliable partner to the industry.

Q. What is the key to bringing meaningful innovation to the coatings industry?
A. Simple. In order to bring meaningful innovation, we have to first understand the ongoing needs and challenges of the coatings industry. We practice market-driven innovation, meaning we are continuously learning current satisfaction gaps and anticipating future market trends that impact the demands of coatings. Our experts work closely with customers to share knowledge and insights. We are active in industry associations, technical conferences, and other industry programs. Only then are we able to start innovating, with a fundamental rule  –  our innovations must help our customers reach their performance, productivity, or sustainability goals. This helps us stay focused on innovations that are going to be useful to our customers, while solving unique challenges.

Q. What are some of the most recent innovations Lubrizol has brought to the coatings industry?
A. While the pandemic brought many challenges, it was also a great time for innovation. We recently introduced several new products from our Aptalon™ family of polyamide polyurethanes, all designed to bring outstanding protection and performance for water-based coatings. We’ve also launched new Solsperse™ Hyperdispersants that enable high-quality dispersions for a broad range of applications. We’ve expanded our wax additives portfolio to include PFOA Compliant Lanco™ Surface Modifiers for paints and coatings. And that’s just a few examples. We’ve also recently developed new technologies for advanced ceramics, inkjet printing inks, composites, sustainable packaging, lithium batteries, and much more.
