Sika’s product line includes concrete admixtures, sealants, adhesives, corrosion inhibitors, specialty mortars, epoxy resins, structural strengthening systems, grouts, anchoring adhesives, overlays, and protective coatings. The sale of adhesives, sealants and coatings amounted to approximately $2.837 billion in 2011, up from $2.3 billion the previous year. These products are spread out across the construction segment, which is responsible for about 80 percent of revenue, and the industry segment, which makes up the remaining 20 percent.
In March of the year under review, Sika acquired through its Chinese subsidiary Sika (China) Ltd. a controlling interest in Hebei Jiuqiang Construction Material Co. Ltd., a leading supplier of concrete admixtures in northern China.
As part of its ongoing reorganization in the Middle East, Sika and its local partner founded a regional holding company, Sika Arabia Holding Company WLL, Bahrain, in which Sika holds a 51 percent stake.
At the beginning of July Sika AG acquired BIRO Edwin Bischof AG, a Romanshorn-based plastic products manufacturer with strong skills in multi-component injection molding. BIRO Edwin Bischof AG produces components for the European automotive industry on behalf of Sika, including sound absorbing parts and reinforcers for bodywork structures.
In the same month Sika AG acquired Technokolla S.p.A., a company based in northern Italy and a leader in tile adhesive systems. The Northern Italy-based company generated sales of approximately $47 million in 2010. Sika expects the acquisition to expand its market position in Italy. Based in the northern Italian town of Sassuolo, Technokolla is a subsidiary of the privately owned Fincea Group, of which Iris Ceramica, one of the leading ceramic tile manufacturers in Europe, is also a member. It is number three in the Italian local market for tile adhesive systems as well as having a good presence in the neighbouring countries.
At the end of August Sika AG acquired Colauto Adesivos e Massas Ltda., a Brazilian manufacturer of adhesives and sealants as well as acoustic damping and structural reinforcement elements for Latin America’s fast-growing automobile and transport industry. Colauto is one of the leading suppliers of chemical process materials for the automotive industry in Latin America.
At the beginning of October Sika AG acquired the outstanding shares through its Spanish subsidiary Sika S.A.U. the Comercial de Preresa, S.A.U. (Copsa), a company operating in Spain and Portugal in the fields of flooring, refurbishment and strengthening.
At the beginning of December Sika acquired through its Canadian subsidiary the company Duochem Inc., which manufactures and sells polymer flooring and waterproofing products for the construction industry. Duochem Inc. is located in Boucherville, Quebec, Canada with annual sales of approximately CHF 9 million (USD 9.7 million). Duochem was founded more than 40 years ago and produces polymer flooring products for a wide variety of industrial and architectural applications, and polyurethane waterproofing coatings and membranes used in the protection of parking decks and concrete structures. The products are manufactured in Quebec and sold primarily to customers throughout Canada.
Shortly before the end of the year Sika acquired the global concrete admixture and cement grinding aid business of the Italcementi Group, which trades under the brand Axim. Axim includes several production and sales organizations in Italy, France, the USA, Canada, Morocco, and Spain and offers a broad range of products.
Sika launches Sikasil product line
Sika Corporation introduced during 2011 the Sikasil line of silicone sealants and adhesives. The product range is an addition to the broadest technology range of sealants and adhesives offered in North America the company said. Released under the Sikasil brand name, the product range includes: Sikasil-GP, general purpose acetoxy cure; Sikasil-N Plus US, an assembly neutral cure; Sikasil-SG-10, a neutral fast cure structural adhesive; and Sikasil-WS290 and Sikasil-WS 295 neutral cure for weather sealing and semi-structural applications. Sikasil products are available in multiple colors and package configurations including 10 ounce cartridges, 20 ounce unipacs, and pails and drums for assembly line operations. The products are ideal for general and specialty use in the transportation, appliance and building components markets.
