Beckers Inaugurates FutureLab – New Coil Coating Sustainable Innovation Center in the UK
Beckers Group announced the grand opening of the FutureLab in Liverpool, UK. This facility will drive the development of the next generation of coil coatings. The new building effectively doubles the capacity of Beckers’ long-term development department, enhancing the company’s ability to make more sustainable coatings.
FutureLab features several new pieces of equipment that will be key for future developments, such as the enhancement of UV/EB coatings. Cutting-edge sustainability features have been incorporated into its design and build, including Beckers’ own thermal-control coating on the roof that reduces the amount of energy needed to heat the building, an active carbon filtration system on a VOC exhaust chimney and heat pumps to reduce CO2 emissions related to heating.
Furthermore, a customized experience room is ready to welcome all customers and partners who are keen on collaborating with Beckers on future developments. These features not only enhance the functionality and efficiency of the FutureLab but also align with Beckers’ commitment to pioneering positive impact and innovation in the industry.
The center aims to act as a hub for creativity, collaboration, and cutting-edge research, while contributing to society by promoting education and local job opportunities.
“FutureLab represents a significant leap forward in our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Gavin Bown, CTO. “This state-of-the-art facility embodies our dedication to pioneering new technologies and sustainable practices that will lead the coatings industry into a brighter, more responsible future. I am thrilled to inaugurate FutureLab and excited for the groundbreaking work that will emerge from here.”

Beckers Group Reveals Leadership Changes to Drive its Strategic Ambition
Beckers Group recently announced a strategic change of its regions and leadership to bolster the ambitions of its Green Lights Strategy.
New regional structure and leadership:
The restructuring reflects Beckers’ commitment to global growth and operational excellence. The changes are effective from July 1, 2024, and all three leaders will report directly to Beckers’ CEO Christophe Sabas.
In March 2024, Beckers launched its restated purpose and vision to support the ambitious goals of its Green Lights strategy with the vision of raising the standard of care for our world. The strategic change in the organization is the next step on this journey as Beckers adapts its regional structure to realize its growth potential globally.
The new structure aims to capitalize on business development opportunities, particularly in sustainability and market share growth across its Coil and Industrial Coatings businesses. The leadership updates are expected to drive innovation and profitability – to ensure Beckers’ continued market leadership in Coil Coatings.

Beckers Group is building a new Sustainable Innovation Center in the UK to help to unlock the potential of more sustainable coil coating technologies such as ultraviolet/electron beam (UVEB) curing.
The two-story 300 square meter innovation center will double the capacity of Beckers’ Long Term Development (LTD) R&D team that is working to develop future coil coating capabilities. The new SEK 20.5 million building next door to Beckers’ existing LTD facility in Liverpool will break ground in March 2023 and should be complete at the end of the year.
The aim is for the center to become a flagship for sustainable innovation to drive sustainable coil coating R&D. The innovation center is designed to develop both application technologies and coating formulations that are more sustainable.
The innovation center will also be a living showcase for the latest in more sustainable coating solutions. The walls and roof of the building will use a cladding system that utilizes a partially bio-resin coating developed by Beckers for improved material sustainability. The coating applied to the roof will also use Beckry®Therm technology to improve thermal control in the building to reduce the energy required for air conditioning and increase the service life of the cladding system.
The coatings used for the building will also be sourced and manufactured as sustainably as possible.
One more sustainable coil coating technology that the center will specialize in from the beginning is UV/EB curing. Beckers Group has adapted the use of UV/EB curing technology for the coil coating industry and developed the necessary paint formulations since 2005.

Becker’s recently launched BeckryCore Core Plate Varnish (CPV), which helps the e-mobility industry by enabling electric motor innovation and efficiency, contributing to a low-carbon society.
Electric motors have laminated cores that are made up of thin laminations of electrical steel. These laminations are coated on both sides to insulate them, which reduces magnetic losses. The coatings must also be heat resistant.
BeckryCore is a waterborne CPV that builds on the company’s extensive experience in coil coating applications and strengthens its position as a leader in sustainable coatings. It not only allows thinner coatings than other products on the market, but it also enhances electrical motor efficiency by reducing power losses in the core laminates and improving magnetic properties.
Another advantage is that BeckryCore ensures excellent stamping performance, which means it doesn’t wear out the stamping tools or create dust during manufacturing compared with other coatings. The CPV is produced in Sweden and is available globally to electrical steel producers and ultimately electrical motor manufacturers. Beckers provides local support in all markets with our own factory trained experts.
BeckryCore is the outcome of collaboration between Beckers Sweden, Beckers’ central Long-Term R&D unit (LTD), customers and most major electrical steel companies. It is approaching customers that coat electrical steel, including electric steel companies with their own coating line and companies that specialize in coating electrical steel.

According to Paul Schrotti, chairman of Beckers Group, “Christophe has strong business acumen and a deep understanding and experience of Beckers’ business. He has successfully led the largest business area of the Group to a leading market position. The Board of Directors knows Christophe as a highly respected and knowledgeable leader with the ability to adapt to change. With his value-based leadership he will continue the journey to become the world’s most sustainable coatings company.”
Beckers launched its sustainability strategy, noting that COVID-19 has shown that everything can change in the blink of an eye.
Beckers believes that sustainable businesses are more resilient, better prepared for the future and that building a sustainable company now is more important than ever. Thus, the company has developed a clear roadmap for the next decade in the form of its 2030 Sustainability Strategy.
