E-Mobility
As global demand for electric vehicles – and e-mobility in general – continues to accelerate, AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business has switched on to the growing needs of its customers by developing advanced technologies to help power the industry into the future.
Manufacturers of electric vehicles and components want world class solutions to help protect motors, battery system and electrical storage units and the company can now offer a dedicated powder coatings portfolio, alongside a team of technical specialists to provide expert assistance.
“Thanks to our renowned Resicoat brand, we have more than 50 years of experience in offering tried, tested and proven performance for a wide range of electrical insulation and high temperature solutions,” explained Daniela Vlad, director of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings. “Building on that global track record, we’re now taking our innovation even further to help power up the next generation of e-mobility through both our Resicoat and Interpon brands.”
R&D Center
AkzoNobe has opened a new research center which will develop pioneering products for the rapidly growing area of powderon wood at its site in Como, Italy.
The new R&D facility – which features an application lab, process lab, and analytical and testing lab is dedicated to delivering low cure powder coatings for use on heat-sensitive substrates (such as MDF, plywood, thermoplastics and composites).
Its inauguration follows the recent acquisition of Stahl’s powder coatings activities, which gave AkzoNobel access to a broad range of solutions, including unique UV technology. The Como center will now focus on developing an expanding portfolio of low cure solutions, including low bake, UV and ultra-low bake (ULB) powder technologies. This will enable customers to use less energy during production, gain process speed and boost their own sustainability profile.
“We’re excited to build on our global leadership position and enter new markets while bringing more surfaces to life for our customers,” explains Daniela Vlad, Director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business. “In addition to strengthening our position as a technology leader, the new facility will also help to accelerate our speed to market so we can reach our customers even faster.”
She adds that this is only the first phase of the company’s expansion into powder on wood, with plans in place to open additional R&D centers in Asia and North America.
Expansion in South and Central America
AkzoNobel has reached an agreement to acquire Colombia-based paints and coatings company Grupo Orbis, expanding its presence in South and Central America. Completion is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected by end of this year, or in early 2022.
Present in ten countries in South America, Central America and the Antilles, Grupo Orbis has consolidated revenue of around (€260 million. The transaction includes the Pintuco paints and coatings business, Andercol and Poliquim (resins) and Mundial (distribution and services).
“This is an excellent intended acquisition which aligns perfectly with our Grow & Deliver strategy of creating leading global positions and driving growth in emerging markets,” explains AkzoNobel CEO, Thierry Vanlancker. “It will expand our long-term position across South America by establishing us as a frontrunner in the Andean region and in Central America, where several countries are high on the global growth rankings for the next decade.”
