Editor, Coatings World
The June issue of Coating World published Part 1 of this Q&A. Included in the interview are: Avinash Bhaskar, Transportation Coatings Segment manager, Dispersions, Resins & Additives – North America, BASF; Laura Bittle, sales and global marketing director at Borchers; Silvia Ziebold, global marketing industrial applications and Tobias Niderleitner, global technical segment BU, Clariant; Thomas Polaski, field marketing manager – architectural coatings and Yujie Liu, technical service scientist at Dow Coating Materials; David Grabacki, president of keim additec surface USA; Scott Brown, global technical manager, materials performance and protection at Lonza; Rich Czarnecki, technical director at Micro Powders Inc.; Joon Choo vice president of Shamrock Technologies; and Scott VanRemortal, technical sales manager at Unimin. CW: What are the latest technologies being developed for additives in paint and coatings? BASF: BASF offers a wide variety of Tinuvin Light Stabilizers performance additives. Some of the latest technologies are a) Tinuvin CarboProtect – A very red-shifted benzotriazole based UV absorber for solvent-borne coatings over carbon fiber reinforced plastics and epoxy matrix b) Tinuvin 249 – A new non-basic hindered amine light stabilizer that shows no exudation in polar solvent-borne systems and demonstrates broad compatibility and good weathering performance c) Tinuvin -DW technology offering selected benzotriazole and Triazine UV absorbers and hindered amine light stabilizers for water-borne coatings based on novel encapsulation additive technology. Borchers: Additives that perform as good in waterborne as in solventborne coatings in regards to color development, transparency and jetness with high jet carbon black pigments for the automotive market which is being driven by the needs of their customers. Clariant: The trend is going towards more sustainable products with a good price-performance ratio. Clariant recently developed wax additives based on 100% renewable raw materials, which give the wood coatings for floorings, furniture or even plastic coatings imitating the wooden character a protection function combined with smooth hand feeling and slip performance. These effects can be generated with CERIDUST 8090 and CERIDUST 8091. Furthermore, Clariant introduced a new product line called LICOCARE RBW, also based on renewables, offering high performance in coatings & inks applications. Our new sugar-based neutralizing agent Genamin® Gluco 50 offers a ground-breaking combination of VOC/SVOC-free, label-free, renewable content and multifunctional performance. The novel additive is a dimethylglucamine, derived from glucose. As a result of our breakthrough, manufacturers can develop waterborne paints and lacquers with improved paint lifetime and storage, which have a pleasant smell and are easy to apply – ideal for indoor environments – and satisfy ecolabel criteria. The amine was developed specifically for use as 3-in-1 neutralizer, compatibilizer and stabilizer ecofriendly, waterborne paints. Genamin Gluco 50 creates an unrivalled opportunity to improve paint characteristics beyond the pH-value and system stabilization of a standard neutralizer and to reduce additive use. It is proven to even outperform alternative multifunctional additives, including AMP in aspects such as storage stability, flash rust, pigment compatibility and odor. Genamin Gluco 50 has no negative influence on paint properties such as gloss or on drying or film hardness. Further trends include low and stable viscosity of water based intumescent coatings, enhanced shelf life and stable products against low temperatures during storage and transport conditions. In recent years, coating formulators, mainly for plastic coatings applications in automotive asked for low migratory light stabilizers which can ensure a high persistence and performance in the coated substrate. Clariant has recently released HOSTAVIN 3070 P, a low migratory light stabilizer fully compatible with common binders used for plastic coatings applications. Dow Coating Materials: Dow Coating Materials continues to innovate to offer customers additives that will offer them the paint performance qualities and application characteristics that make the most impact across applications. Recently, Dow Coating Materials has focused in part on the use of silicone chemistries as additives that can offer a step-change in certain performance qualities for coatings. kei additec: The selection of raw materials that contain a high level of sustainability is key. Also it is essential that our EHQS Team continue to stay well versed in the ever-changing “alphabet-soup” of global regulatory issues. Lonza: Coatings which provide an antimicrobial surface after application are an active area of new product development. Micro Powders: Much of our latest technology utilizes our unique composite technology, where we melt process waxes, polymers, inorganics, actives, and other materials, and then precisely micronize this composite material. This technology can be used to enhance surface durability, modify particle density, and improve wax particle mobility and efficiency. Shamrock Technologies: Formulators have asked for easier-to-use and multifunctional products, and in many cases, pre-dispersed formulations which are stable and have a longer shelf life. Much of the new development work has been directed at fulfilling these requests. Unimin: Super Stain Resistance and Washable interior deco coatings in NAM. Materials that can contribute to this. CW: Please provide a brief description of up to two new performance enhancing additives. BASF: Tinuvin CarboProtect is a UV absorber specifically developed to protect carbon fiber reinforced materials (CFRMs) and other UV-sensitive substrates from UV and near UV light. Tinuvin CarboProtect enables the use of clear coatings over CFRMs so they may be designed as a structural element in automotive, watercraft, sporting goods, renewable energy platforms, and other decorative/fashion industries. Tinuvin CarboProtect-based formulations allow the surface of CFRMs and other UV-sensitive substrates to be coated with a highly protective transparent layer which opens the possibility of a variety of new design options: • The use of stylistic high performance structural material • An opportunity to display the various weave patterns of carbon fiber • The black color of the CFRM is an accommodating base for clear coats • tinted with transparent color pigments and sparkling effect pigments • enabling decorative and stylistic features Key performance highlights
