This Color Trends 2022 report delves into what color themes and palettes will be most popular among homeowners this year, according to a survey of 64 top interior design professionals. As the pandemic continues to influence interior design, we’ll see people continuing to opt for warmer, earthier tones compared to previous years.
Warm Neutrals Dominate Interiors
Having spent so much time indoors over the last couple of years, homeowners are welcoming the calming feel of nature into their homes as well as warmer feeling hues. Along those lines, 66% of interior design experts say that warm neutral colors will be the most popular interior palettes, followed by 59% who say earthy tones. These two palettes gained positions last year as the most popular colors and we can say they are here to stay.
There is also a desire to make interiors more aesthetically interesting. Homeowners have had time to reconsider their spaces and decor and it is therefore no surprise that 52% of professionals say neutrals with pops of bold colors will be the most on-trend color palette. To the same end, there is a continued move away from gray.
Sage Green Dominates Both Living Rooms And Bedrooms
The popularity of nature-inspired color themes will be seen throughout the home this year. Sage green is expected to top most homeowners’ list of color choices for living rooms and bedrooms according to 53% and 48% of interior design professionals, respectively. Cream, taupe and cool off-white will also feature as the biggest color trends in both rooms.
These color themes work well as neutral backdrops. Off-white and taupe work well in smaller rooms as they can make a space appear larger. Whereas for bigger rooms, cream is a better color option as it can help create a cozier feeling while remaining light.
Bolder popular choices include navy and khaki green. Navy is said to be the most popular bedroom color in 2022 by 28% of experts in Fixr.com’s survey, while 12% said it’ll be a top trend in living rooms. Navy can work well as an accent wall for those who do not want to commit to one color for the whole room. The same can be said for khaki green, of which 13% believe will prove most popular for living rooms - tying in to the overall theme of nature-inspired colors dominating trends.
Black is the Most Popular Color for Front Doors
When it comes to front door color options, a majority of 56% of experts say that black is going to be the most popular this year. Black is a great option to match with almost all siding colors and works well as a contrast against popular house colors such as white and off-white. Royal blue, chosen by 22% of experts, can have the same effect of adding a rich depth to the exterior look of a home.
Wood tones (36%), hunter green (19%), and sage green (16%), coming in the next positions as top front door colors, all fit into the overwhelmingly popular trend of incorporating natural themes and elements into home design this year.
Whites and Creams For Selling a House
When it comes to selling a home, the last thing experts recommend is to have bold colors which make it difficult for would-be buyers to imagine putting their own stamp on the interior design. This is why a huge majority of 81% of industry professionals recommend whites and creams for the interior in order to sell a house. Whites and creams also give off a clean, fresh impression to any room and make it easier for homebuyers to imagine some of their own design choices against the neutral backdrop.
White and Off-White are Top Choices for Exteriors If You Want to Sell
Similarly to the interior, the exterior of a home for sale has to appeal to potential buyers. The exterior is the first impression people get of the home, and therefore it should not be off-putting.
Whether a house is old or new, a fresh white coating of paint will give a crisp, clean look to any dwelling. This is why 58% of industry professionals believe that white will be the most popular exterior color for selling a home, while 41% opted for off-white, which also has a universal appeal. Both colors can increase the curb appeal of a home.
Another plus point is that these colors do not distract from any sellable features of the home, such as a porch or beautiful architectural style. In choosing house exteriors, however, it is important to look at other aspects, like regional preferences or your homes’ architecture.
Recent Circumstances Influence Current Color Trends
Paint trends this year show how people have begun to reconsider their interior spaces. Recent circumstances have influenced how people use their homes; from working remotely to seeking safety and respite. The desire to get back in touch with the freedom of nature, while creating warmer feeling spaces to relax in, goes some way in explaining the reasons behind the top paint trends in 2022.
