Industry is Looking Forward to the 2023 European Coatings Show

The European Coatings Show (ECS) plus Adhesives, Sealants, Construction Chemicals is the leading exhibition for the international coating and paint industry. It is typically held every two years at Messe Nuremberg in Nuremberg, Germany, but like so many other trade shows, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the 2021 exhibition.

The 2019 ECS attracted a record 1,156 exhibitors and more than 30,000 from around the world. Now that the European Coatings Show is returning in 2023, there is much pent-up demand, and the ECS looks like it will enjoy a major return.

This year’s show floor will fill eight halls, while the conference will feature more than 140 presentations. Vincentz Network, the organizers of ECS 2023, notes that six of the halls will be dedicated to raw materials for paints, printing inks and adhesives, construction chemical precursors, and associated services. Hall 4 will put the spotlight on laboratory and production technology, testing and measuring systems, application technology, environmental protection and occupational safety. Hall 4 A combines exhibitors from all product segments. Hall 2 will feature start-ups.

Kristina Wilger, director event management, Vincentz Network, noted that this year’s European Coatings Show looks “very promising” in terms of exhibitor and pre-registration numbers.

“Over 1,000 exhibitors are registered right now,” added Wilger. “The pre-registration in terms of visitors and delegates also looks very promising.”

There will be more than 140 product presentations on stages set in Halls 3, 3A and 5, in which exhibitors will share their expertise on using their raw materials and laboratory, production, testing and measuring technology.

Wilger said that in terms of topics will be of particular focus this year, the ECS will feature trends and technologies, covering all aspects of the production of paints, coatings, sealants, construction chemicals and adhesives.

“The 140 Product Presentations sessions will give an overview of novel coating products,” Wilger reported. “The Start-up Area in Hall 2 allows start-ups and young companies from Germany and other countries to present their companies and product innovations.”

European Coatings Conference

The European Coatings Conference is held in conjunction with the ECS, and takes place March 27-28.

Prior to the conference, there will be nine pre-conference tutorials on Sunday, March 26 led by industry experts. The topics will be Functional Coatings; Formulating Adhesives and Sealants; Understanding Biocides and the Latest Regulations; Polyurethane Coatings; Dispersing Pigments and Fillers – Theory to Practice; Basics of Architectural Coatings; Fundamentals of Colour and Appearance; Application Processes in Coatings; and Basics of Anti Corrosive Coatings.

The opening keynote speech will be presented by AkzoNobel’s Wijnand Bruinsma, who will speak on “The Role of Paints and Coatings in a Sustainable Future.” Bruinsma, who is director sustainability for AkzoNobel, will discuss AkzoNobel’s focus on ensuring that the paints and coatings the company supplies can help to safeguard the world far beyond tomorrow. Bruinsma noted that AkzoNobel has identified three key global topics – climate change, circularity, health and well-being – committing to address them.

The conference will have more than 140 presentations broken up into 24 parallel sessions, covering a wide range of topics, waterborne coatings, powder coatings and architectural coatings; pigments, binders and other raw materials; printing inks, adhesives and sealants and construction chemicals.

“One of the many highlights is the opening keynote by Wijnand Bruinsma from AkzoNobel on the topic: “The role of paints and coatings in a sustainable future,” Wilger said. “Furthermore, one session is devoted to the results of an international research partnership funded by the EU. The Decoat Project is developing a solution to facilitate the use of textiles and plastic components with (multilayer) coatings according to the closed loop recycling principle. The pre-conference tutorials on the Sunday, March 25 provide the opportunity to learn all the important basics on multiple topics.”

European Coatings Show

The European Coatings Show will offer manufacturers of paints and coatings, adhesives, sealants, printing inks and constructions chemicals, suppliers of raw materials and industrial processors the opportunity to meet industry experts and learn about the latest technologies being offered for the paint and coating and ink industries.

The ECS will cover eight exhibition halls, as exhibitors highlight the new technologies and services they have come up during the past four years.

Wilger noted that this is the first European Coatings Show since the pandemic, and attendees and exhibitors alike are enthused about getting the ECS up and running again.

“The whole industry is very excited about it and can’t wait to see each other in Nuremberg after four years,” said Wilger. “Make sure to attend and feel the vibrant mood on the show floor.”
